One of the best books ever written about a ship.

In 1981 I was a serving in Gibraltar where I was employed to teach and supervise scuba diving and became recognised for carrying a large underwater camera housing (courtesy of a previous posting to Hong Kong!). One morning, I received a request from a naval commander asking me if I would photograph the bottom of HMS Intrepid as she lay alongside Coaling Island. Intrepid was the younger sister ship of HMS Fearless. During the task, I was informed that both Fearless and Intrepid were being cleaned so that they could be "mothballed." A few months later, however, Argentina invaded the Falklands and all that changed.

After a moving dedication, brief details of the previous 6 RN ships to hold the name HMS Fearless and a foreword by Lord Carrington KG, this author takes the reader skilfully through every aspect of the ship and her life - and does so in a very clever way. Commencing with one of the most "readable" introductions found in any book, we move on to an equally readable "Acknowledgements" which is memorable for not being a list of references.

Then we get down to cases. Firstly, in order to understand the ship and what happened during her 40 years as a British warship, we have to start with understanding Amphibious Warfare. This is followed by Staffing requirements and a detailed description of the Assault Ship.

Then comes the clever bit. We are then treated to a blow by blow account of the life of this great ship - as seen through the eyes of her First Senior Officer (her commissioning officer) and no fewer than 20 Commanding Officers. From the early days of a network of scaffolding in the Harland and Wolff yards of Belfast to her being decommissioned and laid up at Fareham Creek in 2005, it really is all there and when you have finished, you will think you had been on board for the entire journey.

It is a journey which has spanned wars, conflicts and extraordinary stories - hundreds of extraordinary stories.

An absorbing read and a "must" for anyone with an interest - especially anyone who once trod her decks

Opening up of ship life

This book describes a huge piece of machinery that comes to life as a ship in the words of those who served in her. Many details before unknown to me make up ship life and this book brings this life into reality for me. It can be pretty tedious, almost boring at times in its meticulous description of where Fearless sailed, when she was in dock and when there was great excitement aboard. I guess that's exactly the mix that makes up the life of men in this ship. Ewen Southby-Tailyour brings reality to life in his book.

A fascinating true account of one man's travels that kept me entertained from start to finish

As an avid traveler, I have come to enjoy true tales of adventures during the times I am sedentary. I was referred to this book by a friend who thought I would enjoy it as much as she did. I am happy to say that she was right. I immediately enjoyed the writers direct style of speech; a style that made you feel like he was right in the room telling you tales of his travels. Also, he took the time to delve into and flesh out his accounts with elucidating details and a strong grasp on timing. His travels and travails, placed in this autobiographical account, were lively representations of a life that most would only dream of living.

I was engrossed by many parts of this book as the author moved from Britain and France, all the way to exotic locales like Turkey and Amman. His harrowing tale of an attack in London with his friend John and Rich was intense, and his descriptions of Edinburgh made me long for the cold castle walls and the surrounding pubs of Scotland. Another account I really loved was his run in with “Mother Hen”. This was a humorous situation about a terrible individual, and the way the author dealt with her was just laugh out loud perfect. By the end, even the bittersweet details of his relationship with a particular female and the difficult decisions they made were an honor to hear about.

In summation, I enjoyed this book because the writer’s experiences were so diverse and intriguing. The locales were enjoyable to read about and so many of the people that inhabited his world all possessed the ability to put a mark on your memory. If you’re looking for a wonderful read by a unique writer that will keep you entertained throughout, then I can’t see you doing much better than this book. For me, it was a total pleasure.

Bring on the travel!

I go on at least 2 travel adventures a year and there is little I love more than reading others account of their own travel experience (aside from experiencing my own). What is unique about this one for me is that the traveling is enjoyed all over the world. So, there is this kind of culture exploration that I found especially entertaining. It kind of reads like your sitting down with the author in a pub while he just spills on his experience, giving fun, and vivid accounts of the people. places and things and even a little internal struggle. It is a great read and I highly enjoyed it. The really great part, is that I was offered this read in exchange for my honest opinion and I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated that I would! Now I feel the travel bug and want to reach well outside my norm and head out of the country.

An adventurous travel book

"The World At Large" is an awesome travel book with real life experience. I always love traveling and this book was really exciting for me.

The author revealed the travel experience of an Australian guy, Adam, who is young and passionate to travel the world. His journey started from the UK and he traveled to Scotland, France, Turkey, Egypt and Israel.

The way this travel book written, I am impressed. It has composed with enough details, photos and information about the places he visited.

Adam was very adventurous and his traveling experience entertained me. He has that capability to engage with new people so easily and I really liked that.

It's such a wonderful book through which I felt adventurous. I wish, I could be there with Adams. Lovely travel book!

Reading Another Person's Mail Was Never So Delightful

Helene Hanff was a New York writer and Frank Doel was a London bookseller. This book chronicles the letters they wrote over a period of many years to one another. Although they never met, they became true friends bonded by their love of literature.
Having read this tiny little gem, I can tell you that I'm not even sure why I liked it so much. Maybe it was because I loved seeing a warm friendship develop between two total strangers. Maybe it was because I loved the dry wit of Helene and the staunch Britishness of Frank. Maybe it was because I liked hearing about the WWII years, how the people of Britain sacrificed, and how one caring American woman made a difference to this small group of Britishers.
One note: this is the only book I have ever read that is truly enhanced by the video. Read the book, then rent the movie. Anne Bancroft is the perfect Helene and Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as Frank.

A Joy to Treasure

I waited too long to finally read 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and I have no reasonable excuse for it. Someone had lent me a copy and it was the only book in my backpack on the commute to work one morning as I had forgotten to bring the book I was reading, so I started it and had one of the best journeys of my life. I immediately ran out and bought my own copy as I knew that I would read this book over and over again. It is very funny and, in the end, quite touching in ways that all readers will understand and appreciate. The best endorsement of this book is that it will get one to investigate all sorts of old classics and look at reading and writing in new and different ways. I personally will be letting used books fall open just to see what interested a reader from the past and what he or she is trying to tell me. I little trick gratefully picked up from the delightful Helene Hanff.

Beautiful, with a heart-rending and tragic moral

This is the story of an American writer (the author of the book) who strikes up a friendship by mail with a bookseller in England. The entire book is a series of unedited and un-commented-on letters exchanged between Hanff and the Marks & Co. booksellers at 84 Charing Cross Road. Her primary pen pal is a man named Frank Doel, with whom she shares a love of old books. [Perhaps this is the point where I should say that I flatly disagree, without reservation, with the previous reviewers who believe there was a potential romantic attachment between the two of them.]
The correspondence runs from 1949 until 1969, during which time Helene and the people at 84 Charing Cross Road exchange Christmas gifts and news of their families, but never meet. At least in the early years of the correspondence, almost every year Ms. Hanff states her intention to come over to visit England, but something always comes up to prevent the trip.
In 1969, one of Hanff's letters to Frank Doel is answered by another member of the firm, informing her that Frank Doel has died.
This is a beautiful book, which can be read in 45 minutes. I suppose every reader will take his or her own lessons from the book, but here is mine: If there is something you really want to do in your life, then DO IT when the opportunity arises. Time is finite. If you keep saying, "Maybe next year," there will eventually come a time when there IS no next year. It is a painful tragedy that Helene Hanff never got to England to meet Frank Doer and the other people at Marks & Company, and that poignant sadness is what stayed with me after I had closed the book.

My girls love this book, 10 & 7, I didn't read it personally but I heard big belly laughs every time they picked it up. Their favorite part was when the little girl called the doctor and said she had to eat cookies to feel better.
