Nearly worthless

Having recently taken the SANS course to prepare for the exam and successfully passed the exam, it is easy for me to say that this book will get you almost nowhere in preparing for the exam. It barely skims over the Java language and security issues. The certification covers much more than this.

About the Author
Thomas A. Schwandt is Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, in 2002, he received the Paul F. An Excellent Synopsis

This book contains everything a modern reader who is anything but a professional Middle East scholar could ever want to know about the history of the region (especially about the Arab-Israeli conflicts). Most importantly, it is presented in a strictly factual, unemotional manner which allows the reader to understand the current problems there and to make his or her own judgments without the facts being skewed or, indeed, being portrayed in a subjective light at all. With this account under one's belt, it is impossible to see the conflicts of the Middle East in a wholly black-and-white, right-and-wrong way. Indeed, the cold facts show how all parties involved have countless reasons for their behavior, and how no one party can ever be completely blamed.
Having also read what Mansfield himself considered to be his crowning achievement, "The Arabs", I actually feel that this is a superior work, at least for my purposes. "A History of the Middle East" presents a more sweeping view for the amateur (but serious) scholar, and can be used as a good reference despite being more than a decade old.
Mansfield follows the region from prehistory, through the Ottoman Empire, and into the modern age, explaining events and motivations in a reasonable and straightforward manner.
It must be mentioned that this is not an exciting book for those without a passionate interest in foreign affairs. But those who are driven to know and understand the goings-on of the modern world will find it an invaluable addition to their library.

2 books in one, buy the first edition.

I believe the original author Mansfield would be disappointed in what Nicolas Pelham has done with this "revised and updated" version of his book. Mansfield died in 1996 and Pelham was given the task of "updating" this history of the Middle East. I was very impressed with the first 340 pages of this book. I was looking for an even-keeled, unbiased history of this very charged and polarizing subject. I was very pleased to find that Peter Mansfield had done exactly that. Mansfield's original work went up to the first Gulf War and provided a very even history of events from ancient times to the immediate post-Gulf War period. He provides a very readable account that puts current events into context without betraying his own bias. I had been recommending this book to many friends, before I came to Pelham's contribution that picks up in the post war period. He doesn't even try to contain his contempt for the United States and it's allies. The language and tone of the book change dramatically and it is easy to tell where Pelham picks up in the 13th chapter: The Inter-War Years. His contribution amounts to an intensely felt indictment of the United States and it's policy in Middle Eastern affairs. He loses credibility when he throws in trite and petty personal attacks on Western leadership that have no relation to the events he is describing. Even the grammatical integrity changes. There were multiple grammatical and spelling errors in Pelham's chapter. The transition from Mansfield to Pelham is very abrupt and disruptive, regardless of your political leanings. I am very disappointed as the first 340 pages were excellent and exactly what I was hoping for. If you must buy this edition than be prepared. I would have given Mansfield's book 5+ stars and Pelham's contribution 1 star (being generous). I still gave the book a 4 star average because Mansfield's work deserves recognition and it comprised the bulk of the book.

What?

What exactly is this book? Is it, as it purports to be, a manual of psychotherapy? Or is it, as Scientologists seem to believe, Holy Scripture? If the former, it should be updated periodically, in light of new research. If a doctor stood at my hospital bed perusing the 1858 edition of Gray's Anatomy, I would worry. Or is the original text of Dianetics inerrant, being the result of divine revelation? If so, they should say so, and drop the pretence of scientific rigor.

As an example of outmoded thinking, we learn (on page 152 in the 2002 edition, for example) that the homosexual is a 'pervert' who is 'actually quite ill physically'. I wonder how that goes down in West Hollywood, in the shadow of that splendid pastel blue Scientology building complex.

What are we to make of a theory that states that psychological disorders can arise from the fetus - or even the fertilized egg, the zygote - overhearing and recording conversations from the outside world? An example given is of a husband beating his pregnant wife while shouting, "You've got to take it!" The poor child that results will grow up to be a kleptomaniac ('You've got to take it'. Geddit?).

If dialogue can be so destructive to the unborn, perhaps we need a new movie rating of FU, for 'Fetus Unfriendly'.

In fact, the theory goes even deeper into absurdity. We are told that "it is not true that emotion gets into the child through the umbilical cord...Emotion comes on another (more electrical than physical) type of wave...Therefore, anyone who is emotional around a pregnant woman is communicating that emotion straight into the child." 'Straight into' you notice, like some sort of radio transmission. Believe that and you'll believe anything.

Here's another: "It may be that a patient is urgent in her insistence that her father raped her...Large numbers of insane patients claim this. And it is perfectly true. Father did rape her, but it happened she was only nine days beyond conception at the time. The pressure and upset of coitus is very uncomfortable to the child and normally can be expected to give the child an engram which will have as its content the sexual act and everything that was said." In other words, a man making love to his wife nine days after she becomes pregnant is effectively raping his daughter and condemning her to insanity.

Such drivel fills the 700 or so pages of this book.

Finally, what words can describe the author's writing style? 'Pompous', 'overblown', 'clumsy' and 'confused' come to mind, but I think I'll settle for 'ludicrous'.

Neither scientific nor inspirational, this thick slab of nonsense will not cure anyone of any psychological disorder except insomnia.

This is a great book if you know nothing about science and what is actually supportable, but sadly i do and this isn't based on real science it's based on concepts that were obviously made up there is no research to back up these claims.

A psychoanalytic theory based on units of memory

I read this book as I walked up to a Scientology counter in Portsmouth city center when I was feeling rather down, depressed and lost in 2004. After an electrical experiment at the counter I was given the book Dianetics that I read quite quickly. It didn't seem too influential to me and didn't resonate with what I needed to become more secure. I found it resemble Freud's technique of psychoanalysis where the memories of the past influenced the memories of the present. The unit of memory in L. Ron Hubbard's approach that influences the present seems rather based on common sense in how I grew up and was educated in the 1980s but that was all that I found theoretically right but even that was not practical in terms of finding security in a confused time in my life. It was easily readable and the simplicity may attract some but after finding out about L. Ron Hubbard's past and his interest in Satanic doctrine and relationships I realized not only was I glad I did not conform to the rules of Dianetics but that they did not work for me and seemed even irrelevant or unusable in my life. I give Dianetics a two star grade as it remains a relevant book in history through the institution of Scientology even though I do not agree with their values but the book was relatively well written and had adequate context of its philosophy.

Too much, too little, need more -- focus

The title is misleading. I searched through every chapter to decipher how to make a profit with passenger, cargo, and/or other areas of air transportation. It covers a tremendous amount of information like aircraft configurations and technical designs. Unfortunately, and all so common, lots of problems given about aviation; but few solutions offered about profit strategies!
Each chapter technically covers an area of air transportation, but even the short chapters are not extensive enough. Only the most fundamental elements are written. There is not enough pertinent information delivered for the reader to absorb a firm understanding about air transportation.
The problem is that this 500 page book covers an awful lot of technical material. He selectively crammed it all into 500 pages. Some important elements are missing. The title of the book should be more concise about which audience the author wanted to attract, and spread all his great information into two brilliantly-written volumes.

Comprehensive Textbook

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the technical and economic aspects of various facets of air transportation including commercial airlines, charter operations, corporate services and other related businesses such as leasing company operations and fractional ownership. The reader gains insights into the areas where costs can be saved and revenues enhanced. For example, the author presents various strategies to minimize fuel usage and hence improve the bottom line.

The book is well written allowing it to be accessible to people working in various specialties in the air transportation business that have opportunities to learn about economic air transport operations. Among the subjects covered include aircraft maintenance economics, various aircraft financing options enabling managers to evaluate those most beneficial for their business and revenue enhancement strategies. The reader will be pleased to learn that environmental issues are not forgotten.

Overall, a useful and helpful book for managers in the air transportation industry who need to learn how to minimize costs, improve revenue and thus enhance profits.

This book is a good guide with not too deep information about the airline industry. I used it as a reference for my undergrad thesis and was quite happy with the information provided as it allowed me to better understand the airline industry.
