A poet everyone should know if you love children

I teach Children's Literature and this particular book is always popular. One, this poet is from El Salvador and I don't many poets from that country for children. This bilingual book is lovely The words swim among the fitting illustrations. Multicultural literature, poetry, immigration, growing up are some of its themes- as is the magic of memory and language. Great book to read to children!

This is a beautiful book that shows Pipil (indigenous people) culture while telling a cute story. I recommend this book for the wonderful story and a great chance to teach children about how it feels to be an immigrant in the US. Although I couldn't read the Spanish translation on each page, the students in my class loved hearing the story. If you know someone from El Salvador, this author's books make a great gift.

I'm a teacher and bought the book to show the different cultures in our classroom. The kids from El Salvador loved and felt proud of sharing their birthplace with the rest of the classmates. The book is wonderful at touching on the topic of immigration. It was a phenomenal way to help my students appreciate other cultures.

A Grand Book

The Visual Guide to the Clone Wars (based on the new animated film), is a remarkable book. Those who are familiar with the film, will find the book very easy to follow, and a delightful look into the film that goes at your pace.

The art is taken from the film, and 'panels' are inserted (and even numbered) so readers can follow the plot scene by scene. It's almost like this is a sophisticated storyboard for Clone Wars that took on a life of its' own. With the book, various elements in the film can be explained on a visual level, and inside jokes like 1138 can be got by savvy fans. (Think THX 1138).

Unlike many visual guides, this one weighs in at 144 pages of pure digital animation joy. Watching the film, I appreciated it, but missed some of the subtle plot nuances. This time, I got them.

The back of the book says it well. "A plan is only as goos as those who see it through". Perhaps this is a reference to the Scorcerors Apprentice, "Finish What you Start".

Either way, the Clone Wars rocks.

A home run for one five year-old!

A new Star Wars convert, my five year old son received this as a gift for his birthday two months ago. Since then, it has rarely left his side, as he reads it constantly. Although the vocabulary is often over his head, the graphics, layout and textual narration are excellent, and continue to command his attention and stimulate his imagination. Note: the book is strictly limited to the Star Wars Clone Wars saga (and graphics/illustrations from the movie/tv series, not any of the 6 SW movies). A very well-done product.

How far would you go to keep your love alive?
Girlfiend is the newest works from the Pander Brothers in a decade and they definitely have not lost their touch. Jacob and Arnold Pander have created an immersive and vivid world, telling the story of the main character Karina, and her complicated life. (except that she's technically dead..) At times the artwork reminds me of Jhonen Vasquez at some points, but at other times the art style leans towards Japanese manga. This book is definitely not text heavy, and relies more so on the black and white, high contrast, artwork to tell a lot of the story, and it's pretty awesome in a really bloody kind of way.
Karina is a beautiful albeit slightly strange vampire, that you can't help but love. She's not just your run of the mill vamp, however, but an "evolved" rare breed of vampire she refers to as "Daywalkers". The story follows the crazy romance between Karina and Nick. I found their relationship endearing if not a bit awkward at first. At first Karina has an almost innocent air about her, which is accentuated by the stuffed animal she sleeps with at night. Karina's need for blood gives Nick an idea, turning them into a twisted kind of vigilantes, picking off the dreaded Blood Brothers gang that has been wreaking havoc in the city. She needs to feed, so why not take out some baddies in the process? I enjoyed the mystery behind Karina and her past and the fact that she has a conscience and hates herself for what she is, from calling herself a monster repeatedly, to not wanting Nick to see her feed, fearing he too will see her as a monster. Nick, however, sees past the fact that she is a vampire, doing whatever it takes to be with her.
I found the first chapter to be a little jumpy, and at times I was slightly confused, but after the first chapter all of the separate story lines begin to intertwine into one bloody tale of love, murder, and revenge. The story line from page one is great, but once all of the separate stories start to converge things get intense. I enjoyed how the cowboy vampire trio ended up being the final piece in connecting all of the characters together.
Girlfiend is one of the best horror comics I have read in a long time and I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. The book is released on April 1 from Dark Horse comics and I highly recommend picking up a copy.

Fun, Sexy, and a Visually Stunning!

I rarely read a trade paperback all the way through in one sitting. When I read a story for the first time I like to consume only one or two chapters a day to lengthen the time I have to enjoy the book. I couldn’t do that with “Girlfiend”. I wanted to gorge myself on this one.
My first experience with the Pander Bros. work was in the 1980s Grendel series. Their art was such a stand out from everything else going on in comics. For me it was the first indication of how far comics can grow in writing and art. “Girlfiend” continues to push the industry. I have been reading comics for over 40 years and to find artists who can grab you for decades is a rare and wonderful treat. The Pander Bros. have a kinetic energy in their work and have honed their craft to a razor’s edge in “Girlfiend”. Buy it, read it, and you will love it.

Decent story suffering from incomprehensible over-inked art.

Solid story about a goth guy who falls in love with a vampire. I like the Pander Brothers art normally but this thing really suffers from being over-inked. It made it really hard to tell the male characters apart since about half of them had the same hair cut. They also tried this reverse negative thing and they might as well have just painted those panels black. I couldn't distinguish what was going on when they used this effect. The story does take some strange leaps. At the end of the first issue Karina has run off into an alleyway. At the beginning of the next issue, she's climbing into bed with Nick. I had to go back and make sure I didn't skip any pages.

Grade 3-6-A colorful volume that is wide in scope but shallow in content. Ardley introduces many areas of science from electricity, to sound and music, to motion and machines. Each activity is given between half a page and two pages, and is illustrated with bright, full-color photographs that clearly show each step in the process. Two or three sentences summarize what takes place, but little of the science is explained. For instance, in "Fly a hot-air balloon" readers are told that hot air rises, but not why. The book does do a good job of presenting science as enjoyable and exciting. It could be useful if supplemented by titles such as Stephen P. Kramer's How to Think Like a Scientist (HarperCollins, 1987) and books on specific areas of interest, such as those found in the "Eyewitness Science" series.

Crisp, color photographs and concise captions make each step easy to follow. Children of various ages are shown performing many of the procedures. A warning about being a safe scientist is fairly inconspicuous on the verso of the title page; a symbol for adult supervision is described there and appears throughout the text where cutting, heating, and potentially harmful substances are required. My 8 year old daughter borrowed this book from the school library and my kitchen hasn't been the same ever since. She has turned into a regular scientist. This book is FULL of real life pictures and NOT drawings. It is a large size book so it is even easier for her to read. She made a thermometer with a clear shampoo bottle, water, food coloring, and a straw. When she witnessed the water rising and falling through the staw she started screaming,"I'm a genius, I'm a genius." This book is very kid friendly and shows how to do experiments step by step with a real life picture for each step. It even shows how to make a real camera with a paper towel tube, tussue box and magnifying glass. One of my favorite experiments is how to make your own flashlight with batteries, an empty bottle, aluminum foil, and a small bulb.

I bought this book for my 11-year-old granddaughter. We were both extremely pleased. I reviewed a lot of other science books before buying this one. I needed to make sure it wasn't too difficult OR too easy. I also wanted experiments that didn't require stuff she needed to go shopping for prior to doing the experiments. I sure made the right choice when I picked 101 Great Science Experiments!

Looks great, but...

The pictures in this book are wonderful, however, our success rate is 0.5 out of 4 for the experiments. I am sure many of the experiments will work, but not the ones we selected. Many of the experiments are quite elaborate, so unless your child is very ambititous, you will be doing quite alot of work.

More than a children's cookbook

The "Alpha-Bakery Children's Cookbook" contains 26 fun recipes that are simple enough for a pre-teen to make (perhaps with a bit of adult supervision). The recipes include main dishes, breads, cookies, cakes, snacks, and other desserts. It's a neat way to introduce children to cooking and baking. What my wife and I discovered is that these recipes are great for adults as well as children. Some of our favorites are quick cheeseburger pie, the pocket pizzas, and the "delicious drumsticks". We've also made the elephant ears, fudge brownies, and lemon squares. Finally, the recipe for the peanut butter cookies (which is included under the ice-cream sandwich recipe) is just about the best we've ever come across. And the "wonderful waffles" are great for Saturday mornings.

My Great Grandmother gave me this book 15 years ago!!! My son is learning his letters and I thought of this book, which I haven't opened in at least 5 years! I thought, for each letter he learns, we'll make that recipe. For example, it has "A-Apple Crisp" "B-Banana Bread" All very simple recipes for children to help and a good variety that even kids would like! Also, in the back it has recipes for Papier-Mache, Playdoh, Finger paint, etc.

About the Author

Sarah V. Mackenzie is associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine. She has dealt with ethical issues in education for many years, first in her own hands-on experiences as a teacher and teacher leader and now in her role as a professor of educational leadership. Her most recent book, Uncovering Teacher Leadership: Essays and Voices From the Field (Corwin, 2007), is a compilation of writing focused on the inner lives of teacher leaders. She and Richard Ackerman published an article in the May 2006 issue of Educational Leadership titled “Uncovering Teacher Leadership.”

In all of her work―as a teacher and a teacher of teachers and leaders―she has recognized the critical relationship between what teachers believe about their work and how successfully they perform that work.

G. Calvin Mackenzie is The Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of American Government at Colby College. He has written extensively about ethics in government and has led ethics seminars for public officials across the country. He served as chair of the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices and was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. A political scientist by training, Mackenzie has been a government professor and scholar for more than 30 years. He has written or edited 15 books, including a leading introductory American government text and several award-winning empirical studies of the national government. His latest book, The Liberal Hour: Washington and the Politics of Change in the 1960s (with Robert Weisbrot) was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in History.

This is a decent book for the price. I like the fact that is delves into WHMCS, because if you are running a hosting business, you WILL probably be using WHMCS quite a bit. And it can take some getting used to. It is not easy, but it is also not rocket science. This book gives you some insight into what you can and cannot do using WHMCS, which makes it very valuable to a beginner like me. It also gives you a general overview of the hosting business but does not go into detail. I would recommend this for someone who is thinking of getting into the hosting business, or is new to it. In my case, I kind of fell into it by accident.
