History of the Mafia, by Salvatore Lupo

When we think of the Italian Mafia, we think of Marlon Brando, Tony Soprano, and the Corleones—iconic actors and characters who give shady dealings a mythical pop presence. Yet these sensational depictions take us only so far. The true story of the Mafia reveals both an organization and mindset dedicated to the preservation of tradition. It is no accident that the rise of the Mafia coincided with the unification of Italy and the influx of immigrants into America. The Mafia means more than a horse head under the sheets—it functions as an alternative to the state, providing its own social and political justice.

Combining a nuanced history with a unique counternarrative concerning stereotypes of the immigrant, Salvatore Lupo, a leading historian of modern Italy and a major authority on its criminal history, has written the definitive account of the Sicilian Mafia from 1860 to the present. Consulting rare archival sources, he traces the web of associations, both illicit and legitimate, that have defined Cosa Nostra during its various incarnations. He focuses on several crucial periods of transition: the Italian unification of 1860 to 1861, the murder of noted politician Notarbartolo, fascist repression of the Mafia, the Allied invasion of 1943, social conflicts after each world war, and the major murders and trials of the 1980s.

Lupo identifies the internal cultural codes that define the Mafia and places these codes within the context of social groups and communities. He also challenges the belief that the Mafia has grown more ruthless in recent decades. Rather than representing a shift from "honorable" crime to immoral drug trafficking and violence, Lupo argues the terroristic activities of the modern Mafia signify a new desire for visibility and a distinct break from the state. Where these pursuits will take the family adds a fascinating coda to Lupo's work.

From Publishers Weekly
A dark thread of crime and corruption weaves insidiously through the fabric of Sicilian society in this intricate historical study. Historian Lupo focuses on the Italian branch of the Mafia, following it from its roots in Italy's 19th-century wars of unification to the anti-Mafia maxi-trial of the 1980s and 1990s, and tracing its infiltration of citrus-growing, construction and other sectors of the economy. He rejects the idea of the organization as a holdover from a traditional Sicilian peasant culture with a socially benign ethos of solidarity and honor as a self-serving Mafia mythology. Instead, he argues, mafiosi run a thoroughly modern, prosaic, protection racket, fomenting crime and then posing as intermediaries who can suppress it, seeking protection and wielding influence in the highest economic and political circles, eager to abrogate omertá and cooperate with the police when it suits their interests. Lupo's rather dense academic treatment of the subject presupposes a good knowledge of Sicilian history as it proceeds through highly detailed but too loosely organized accounts of specific mafioso life histories, police initiatives and major trials, in which one often loses sight of the forest amid the trees. There are stimulating insights, but the book is almost as byzantine as the Mafia intrigues it appraises. (Aug.)

From The New Yorker
For anyone who has grown weary of the fond treatment of the Mafia in American popular culture this book is a tonic. Lupo’s myth-busting history explores why the Mafia survived despite Fascist repression, the “maxi-trial” in Palermo in the nineteen-eighties, and frequent predictions that it would disappear as Italy modernized. While Lupo’s focus is on Sicily, he also sketches the development of the Mafia’s stateside branches, occasioning the fascinating reminder that the crime network’s first American port of call was not New York or New Jersey but New Orleans. Fun is not a priority here, and Lupo often gives only cursory mention of pivotal episodes that might be common knowledge to Italian readers, but his unfailingly fastidious handling of such a slippery subject has its own satisfactions.

Review

What Salvatore Lupo captures particularly well, against all the stereotypes, is the Mafioso as a modern character: the pure distillate of entrepreneurial and criminal intelligence that illuminates the history of both Italy and contemporary Europe. If we can truly break ourselves of the habit of thinking of the Mafia as a belated survival of Sicilian feudalism and the product of underdevelopment, we will have taken a major step forward, and perhaps even be on the road toward a solution.

(Roberto Saviano, author of Gomorrah: A Personal Journey into the Violent International Empire of Naples' Organized Crime System)

History of the Mafia is a tour de force bringing Salvatore Lupo's virtually unequaled expertise about the Mafia, Sicilian history, and Italian politics into play. The book is essential reading for anyone who hopes to be well informed about the Mafia.

(Nelson Moe, Columbia University, and author of The View from Vesuvius: Italian Culture and the Southern Question)

For anyone who has grown weary of the fond treatment of the Mafia in American popular culture this book is a tonic.

(The New Yorker)

This is not a book of dramatic shoot-outs or even one that lingers long on individual characters. It is a sober assessment of the history of a movement.

(Hugh MacDonald Scotland Sunday Herald)

With Lupo's History, you become a lot more knowledgeable about the phenomenon.

(Lee Lamothe Toronto Globe & Mail)

[Lupo] provides a useful spectrum of first-hand historic sources.

(Guy Dinmore Financial Times)

Lupo carefully indicates and assesses the many ways in which the mafia has been understood...Recommended

(Choice)

Well-researched... compellingly argued book,

(Richard Drake H-Italy)

Lupo… is the preeminent scholar of the nineteenth- and twentieth- century Sicilian Mafia whose research is widely respected for its theoretical analysis thoroughly grounded in original archival sources…but newcomers to the field will nonetheless treasure his brilliant introduction.

History of the Mafia
By Mr. R. Linkiewicz
If you are looking for a sensational, titillating account of Mafia activities, full of gore and sleazy details, then avoid this book completely. It is a very scholarly and rational examination of the Mafia's origins and its development into a multinational corporate entity. Those who think of the Mafia as some kind of criminal relic of Sicilian feudalism are likely to have their preconceptions shattered as this book calmly and methodically delineates the interconnections between the Mafia, the Italian Capitalist Establishment and the Italian governing classes. A most fascinating read!

Sociological History for Academic Specialists
By David
A professor of contemporary Italian history at the University of Palermo, Salvatore Lupo wrote "La Storia della Mafia" for other specialists in Italian history and sociology. "The History of the Mafia," translated by Anthony Shugaar, carries over from the original the assumption that the reader shares the author's depth of knowledge of of 19th and 20th century Sicilian politics and sociology. The legibility of Lupo's narrative of incidents suffers from jumping backwards and forwards in chronology to make excursions to related topics before returning to the subject at hand. It is also unfortunate that Lupo wrote the book in dense academic Italian, a dialect that can mystify even educated Italians. An example, as translated:

"If we accept the notion that the depiction of southern Italian anthropology offered here is credible, we should then attempt to distinguish the phenomenon from its context by investigating the way the Mafia organization appropriates cultural codes, instrumentalizes them, modifies them, and turns them into an adhesive to ensure that they remain intact." (p. 11)

So, we should distinguish the Mafia from Sicilian culture by looking at how the Mafia turns cultural codes into an adhesive that holds cultural codes intact? That sludge doesn't make sense as a metaphor, but it is all too characteristic of Lupo's prose. Lupo heightens the effect by extensive quotations from Italian Government reports that add a bureaucratic tone to the work.

Now for the strong points. The book would be an excellent starting point for researching the history of the Italian mafia. It provides outstanding sourcing (36 pages of notes for 275 pages of prose) and a good index. Columbia University Press deserves commendation for producing a physically attractive volume, with particularly legible typeface. In sum, "History of the Mafia" is a better research aid than a narrative history.

Just OK
By Christopher Curatolo
This book is just OK. It is more of a sociological study than a history. This book is more of a supplement to other history books. Read the others first. Then, if you want to know more of the sociological aspects of this topic, you can read this book. I was hoping that it would have additional information on some of the key moments in Cosa Nostra's history, other than those that are already known. In that respect, it was a big disappointment. It did give me a better view as to how the events tranpired. It also is a hard read. Be prepared to think. Be prepared to look for more information.

It's a shame more anime and manga fans don't buy this book!
By Courtland J. Carpenter
To be honest with my title, had I seen this in a bookstore, I probably would have passed. Essays and collected reviews from one person too often give you a slanted point of view, and often not much real information. I like history, and that was the big selling point on this book for me. Too often we buy what's popular, what we know (are exposed to), or from listening to the suggestions of our friends. I'm not speaking of this book purchase now, but of the act of collection, reading, and watching of anime. It's really nice to know the history behind it.

By rights, maybe this book should be four stars instead of five, but I couldn't resist because it filled in a point of interest for me I've wondered about for years. I wrote an Amazon review a few years ago on the anime classic, Spirited Away. In the review I compared the movie to a life changing animated film I had seen as a boy. I've never been able to recall the name, and because of the era, I thought it American or perhaps a Chinese production. I've always looked for it to show up on TV, or in video, hoping I'd recognize the title or the plot. I knew little more than the type of film, plot, and name of the main character.

My dad took me to the film, and I thought it must have been because he was interested in its philosophy. My dad had visited China, and India during WWII as a Cryptographer. After the war, he brought home some items from China, and a good deal of Eastern Philosophy. What I didn't realize is that the movie he took me too, was in reality one of the earliest anime shown in the United States. It was a dubbed film called Magic Boy, that was shown in a limited release in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in June of 1961. Strangely enough, it was another limited release anime, Princess Mononoke, that sparked me to begin collecting anime and manga in 1999. Little did I know that my childhood had been influenced greatly by the earliest film of the anime genre to hit the US. Perhaps I was destined to become an anime lover!

My point here is that this book helped me find out that fact. When I read in the book about the early anime films, I suddenly realized they were from the era when I saw that film. There were three titles, released in the US about then. I looked up the pictures, plots from the web, and got a dead-on match with the film, Magic Boy! As I've read further in this book I find more things I knew little about, milestones that brought about the popularity of anime and manga. As a kind of a time-line, (based on the dates of the articles collected in the book) you can see the growth of anime and manga in the US. You can see as well why there is still a great deal of resistance to it's becoming mainstream, even today.

Just to speak to that issue, inject a little of my own philosophy to a theme expressed in many of the books articles. The answer I speak of is that viewing anime, and reading manga, is justified by the main reason many avoid it. It's new, and its different! While many anime and manga are generic SciFi or Fantasy, often they contain elements of the Japanese culture. If you've watched one too many episodes of some reality show, the same rehashed episode of a sitcom for the 50th time ,you know you too long for something new. Despite cultural differences, most anime stories are easy enough to relate to, we're all humans and many of our goals are the same regardless of culture.

One more thing on the book, this is a good read to put somewhere (you know where I mean) to read in small bursts, periodically. Since it's a collection of anime reviews and small articles, you can read one or two at a time, and pick it back up later. It's not a book you have to read in long sittings.

Fred Patten's Watching Anime, Reading Managa: 25 Years Of Essays And Reviews reports on the anime culture in America, gathering articles on Japanese animation and comics and examining both its fan world and the business of its production. Chapters cover everything from individual anime artists to overall licensing and theatrical issues and features, anime pornography, Japanese anime and manga culture, and more. Dated but still worthwhile
By jmchale1959
Interesting. It's difficult to not give this collection of essays at least four stars, simply because there's so much
material presented. It is, however, like many other books of this type, dated. Also, Patten is dealing with
anime and manga in general, so specific titles/series are not dealt with except where needed to illustrate
the point being made. I guess you could label this as a history text, of sorts, dealing with the medium
during a certain time period, by way of the observations of one individual who was in a position to do so.
If you are interested in that sort of perspective, it's worthwhile.

Post-Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy: The Failure of Reason and Responsibility in the Twentieth Century, by Donald N. Wood

Our society's institutional infrastructures―our democratic political system, economic structures, legal practices, and educational establishment―were all created as intellectual outgrowths of the Enlightenment. All our cultural institutions are based on the intellectual idea that an enlightened citizenry could govern its affairs with reason and responsibility. In the late 20th century, however, we are witnessing the disintegration of much of our cultural heritage. Wood argues that this is due to our evolution into a ^Upost-intellectual society^R―a society characterized by a loss of critical thinking, the substitution of information for knowledge, mediated reality, increasing illiteracy, loss of privacy, specialization, psychological isolation, hyper-urbanization, moral anarchy, and political debilitation. These post-intellectual realities are all triggered by three underlying determinants: the failure of linear growth and expansion to sustain our economic system; the runaway information overload; and technological determinism. Wood presents a new and innovative social theory, challenging readers to analyze all our post-intellectual cultural malaise in terms of these three fundamental determinants.

"Professor Wood's book is about the kind of morality that democracy stands for, how it came to be, what the dangers are to it, and how we might proceed to preserve it. To accomplish such a task, one must have a deep understanding of history as well as a keen sense of contemporary social, technological, and political trends. This is exactly the sort of knowledge Professor Wood posseses, and there is no other phrase for what he has accomplished than tour-de-force."-from the foreword by Neil Postman Chair of the Department of Culture and Communication New York University

Yes, a big disappointment
By Dane S. Claussen
This book proposes that "Intellectualism" was the cause and effect of the "Enlightenment," but that it has been replaced by "post-intellectualism." Wood defines intellectualism as consisting of a search for knowledge, critical thinking, social criticism, and broad liberal arts, all of which he said have been replaced by ignorance, "dumbth" (a decline in analytic thinking), establishmentism (reluc-tance to change the status quo), and specialization, respectively. Wood, who refers to Richard Hofstadter (author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anti-intellectualism in American Life) only once, believes that "post-intellectualism" started with the dilution of universal education in the 1870s (that at a time when only about 2 percent of the population had a high school diploma!), and continued with the 1890s labor movement, the burgeoning popularity of movies and television (in fact, a major reason for Wood's "post-intellectualism" was the replacement of the "Written Word" by the "Electric Media"), and the growing role of government during the twentieth century.
Wood's book is not a worthy successor to Hofstadter. Although he can point to hundreds of phenomena that he claims are post-intellectual, or at least along the trajectory from intellectualism to post-intellectualism, Wood fails to provide a convincing body of evidence for most of his specific charges. Against mass media, he makes a laundry list of such plausible but unproven accusations: artistic exploitation; corruption by commercial support and special interests; being wracked by mergers; a lack of substantive content; the construction of [unrealistic] "reality"; damage to democracy; the promotion of escapism; the propping up of elites; invasions of privacy; an overemphasis on, or promotion of, violence; and being partially responsible for copycat crimes, suicides, aggressive behavior, desensitization, "mean world syndrome," and "narcotizing dysfunction.") I don't doubt that these are effects of mass media, at least among some people, some of the time, but Wood writes as if they all have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, and he provides anecdotal evidence, if that, about such effects.
Most importantly, however, his cause-effect relationship between an "intellectual" world and a "post-intellectual" world is ultimately not clearly supported, nor is the unavoidable implication that the United States was once an "intellectual" country.

deeply flawed--big dissapointment.
By John Ronald
This book comes with a forward by Neil Postman, who is an excellent, sensitive, and insightful author. Sadly, Wood himself just doesn't measure up to the greatness of Neil Postman. The academic or lay reader would do much better in picking up Postman's own _Technopoly_ and going from there. Finding references in the index to Michael Novak and Peggy Noonan, my initial enthusiasm for the book dropped like a rock. Although he raises a few good points here and there, there are other authors who raise them more coherently and are more free of .... Neil Postman once advocated that critical readers learn to develop an internal "... detector" when they read. Well, my ... detector was going off left and right as I plowed through Wood's text, I'm sad to say. Some authors I'd recommend INSTEAD of Wood include historian David F. Noble, Richard A. Brosio, Noam Chomsky, Kirkpatrick Sale, and especially Theodore Roszack's _The Cult of Information_ which is almost on the same par with Postman's outstanding best work,_Technopoly_.
There is a knee-jerk resistance to socialist, left-progressive critiques and insights about political economy all through out this book, and it maintains what seems to me a shockingly naive & plucky "Libertarian" (e.g. in the political party sense rather than philosophical sense) tone all throughout that is extremely grating. Some of Wood's "suggestions" at the end of the book are praiseworthy, but many of them are completely undermined by some of the other suggestions raised by Wood (a chronic problem of many liberals, which is why I opt for left-radicalism personally). Still other suggestions made by Wood are just plain awful or stupid or both. Wood either has no comprehension of the real nature of power or is very self-deluded about it. Much of the work reads not unlike Walter Lippman from the 1920s, and it's hard to say, reading some passages, if Wood really believes in democracy at all; His mood displays an overall defeatist outlook than one of real moral outrage...there is even a hint of smug elitism in parts of the text. All in all, this is a well meaning but very muddled book and will confuse the lay reader more than help him/her. It's mostly a waste of time. Other authors have said the best of what Wood has to say much better than he.
To be fair, the text IS somewhat dated, too, so Wood's gushing on about "telecommuting" and "distance ed" sound REALLY naive in today's world. These early "promises" of the early 1990s have borne mixed and often rotten fruit in our day. Read David F. Noble's _Digital Diploma Mills_ (2002) for contrast and see what I mean.

another side of technology
By John A. Leraas
Changes in a society of the magnitude of the change computer technology has brought to the world are invariably associated with vast shifts in how that society works.
Mr. Woods has done a brilliant job of explaining how the shift in the way we communicate drives shifts in the we think, function, communicate, desire and have our being.
Nicely done.

I tried, but there is no story here. There is a telling of facts, statements concerning the characters, but no story. Things just happen. There is no character development. This book really needed an editor. I returned it.

HEART MELTING LOVE STORY
By Sue Allen Milkovich
This heart melting love story begins with Tyler becoming a father to Julie. He enlists the help of his best friend Jake. This was a beautifully written story about how two gay men are taught by a six year old there is more to life. This is a light and fun read that is very entertaining. The story moves quickly but at the same time is very well developed. I though it was very funny with the interactions with Julie. This is a wonderful story. I highly recommend it!!

From the Author
A Q & A with Michelle Madow, the author of Remembrance!

Q: What was your inspiration for Remembrance?

A: Remembrance was inspired by Taylor Swift's "Love Story" music video. In the video, Taylor sees a guy while walking through campus, and the moment their eyes connect, the scene flashes to the two of them dancing at a beautiful ball dressed in clothes that appear to be from around the year 1815. After watching the video, the characters and story in Remembrance started to piece together in my mind. I started to write it down, and ended up with a finished novel!

Q: How many books will there be in the series?

A: Remembrance is the first part of the Transcend Time Saga, which is told in three parts. The second part is a short story called Vengeance, and the third part is the novel that concludes the Saga, Timeless.

Q: Where can we find you online?

A: I love communicating with fans online! On my website, michellemadow.com, there are links to my Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and all my other social media sites. Be sure to add me on there, because I love meeting and talking to people who enjoyed my books!

"Refreshing and practical. Managing the Customer Experience shows companies how to build the power of their brand. Wheeler and Smith inspire your organization to deliver a different and more valuable offering to your targeted customers."

Bradley T. Gale, author of Managing Customer Value and President, Customer Value, Inc.

"Delivering customers a consistently superior set of benefits is probably the most important driver of value creation. This book provides a number of practical insights which will guide the reader on the difficult but fascinating path leading to great customer value delivery."

Jean-Claude Larréché, The Alfred H. Heineken Professor of Marketing, INSEAD

"A fascinating and insightful book which is equally relevant for the leaders of professional services firms looking to build ¿trusted advisor¿ relationships with their key clients."

Michael Bray, Chief Executive, Clifford Chance

"Managing the Customer Experience is an incredibly practical guide for building customer loyalty in the new century."

Marshall Goldsmith - Founding Director of the Financial Times Knowledge Dialogue and the Alliance for Strategic Leadership.

"Smith and Wheeler show us what the 21st Century Company has to look like if it is to be successful. They show that great brands are not primarily built through advertising but by the experience and value they offer customers."

Professor Peter Doyle, Warwick Business School, University of Warwick

"This book shows how to unlock the full value potential of the customer experience, supported by a wealth of examples from world leaders such as Tesco and Harley-Davidson. The connection made between the Marketing, Human Resources and Customer Service functions is very powerful. This, combined with the emphasis on the role of leadership, makes Managing the Customer Experience required reading for CEO's, Marketing, Human Resource, and Operations Directors, and their teams."

William Gordon, Strategy Partner, Accenture and co-author of Brand Manners.

"In their book, Managing the Customer Experience, the authors bring forward the concept of loyalty and advocacy in customer experience in a very targeted way ¿ unearthing one of the most essential branding rules, which is to make your preferred customers your best ambassadors."

Marc Gobé, President and Executive Creative Director, Desgrippes Gobé Group, author of Emotional Branding: the New Paradigm for Connecting Brands to People.

"If you are interested in increasing customer loyalty, Managing the Customer Experience is the book for you. Most books on the subject focus on your company's image and tell why it's important. This book makes the business case for branding but then shows you how to do it. Full of practical "how to" advice, illustrative anecdotes, and application exercises, it is not only a good read, but a significant investment in your future success."

Richard Whiteley, author of The Customer Driven Company

"Managing the Customer Experience provides a comprehensive blueprint for any organization that wants to deliver a customer experience that supports and builds its brand. Smith and Wheeler bring this intriguing concept to life through a well-researched variety of examples, insights, methods, and tools. Don¿t just read this book ¿ use it!"

Scott Timmins, Vice President, College Marketing, Millea Hall, Babson College

How to "experience the brand" and "brand the experience"
By Robert Morris
Actually, the title of this book is somewhat misleading because Smith and Wheeler have as much of value to say about how to create an appropriate customer experience as they do about how to manage it effectively. In fact, the two are not only connected, they are interdependent. The ultimate objective is to establish an ever-increassing critical mass of customers who are "advocates" or as Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba would characterize them, "evangelists."

Obviously, customer relationship management (CRM) is a multi-stage process which begins with obtaining sufficient and relevant information about the target customer (or customer segments), proceeds through the design and implementation phases, continues with refinement and modification based on rigorous evaluation of CRM initiatives and measurement of their impact. Effective marketing creates or increases demand for whatever is offered whereas effective CRM ensures that "customer satisfaction" becomes "customer loyalty" which, eventually, becomes and remains "customer advocacy."

At this point, it is worth noting that, in several dozen research studies on what customers consider to be most important, three attributes were almost always ranked among the top five: feeling appreciated, convenience (i.e. easy-to-do-business-with or ETDBW), and perceived value. Cost? Depending upon which research study is consulted, it was ranked 9-14 in importance. By the way, Warren Buffett once observed something to the effect, "Cost is what you charge but value is what they think it's worth." Marketers and service providers would be well-advised to keep that in mind.

Credit Smith and Wheeler with providing a remarkably thorough analysis of how to manage the development of relationships with customers which evolve from their satisfaction to loyalty to advocacy. As Bernd Schmitt correctly notes in the foreword, "Towards the beginning of this book, the authors distinguish two key routes toward a Branded Customer Exerience': `experiencing the brand' and `branding the experience.' Experiencing the brand...begins with the brand, turns it into a promise, and delivers on it. Branding the experience is about creating an innovative experience for customers and then branding it.."

Starbucks offers an excellent example. Under Howard Schultz's leadership , the international chain of gourmet coffee shops demonstrates how to combine "excperiencing the brand" and "branding the experience." The result is that Starbucks has become, as Schultz proudly notes, not a "trend" but a "lifestyle." Perhaps no other organization treats its part-time employees treats better (both compensation and benefits) and they reciprocate with a consistency high level of service (both competence and cordiality) and thus function as - yes - advocates. According to Schultz, "What we've done is said the most important component in our brand is the emplopyee. The people have created ther magic. The people have created the experience." Appropriately, Schultz entitled his autobiography Pour Your Heart Into It.

One final point. Most organizations which have problems retaining valued customers probably also have problems retaining valuable employees. Hence the even greater relevance and value of what Shaun Smith and Joe Wheeler share in this book. Peter Drucker once observed, "If you don't have a customer, you don't have a business." There corollary to that insight: "If you don't employees who are competent and cordial as well as committed to the enterprise, you won't have any cuistomers."

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out McConnell and Jackie Huba's Creating Customer Evangelists: How Loyal Customers Become a Volunteer Sales Force, Leonard L. Berry's Discovering the Soul of Service: The Nine Drivers of Sustainable Business Success and On Great Service: A Framework for Action as well as Theodore Levitt's The Marketing Imagination (which includes his classic HBR article, "Marketing Myopia"), Kenneth E. Clow and Donald Baack's Integrated Advertising, Promotion, and Marketing Communications (Second Edition), George E. Belch's Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing Communications Perspective, P. R. Smith and Jonathan Taylor's Marketing Communications: An Integrated Approach, and Noel Capon and co-authors' Total Integrated Marketing: Breaking the Bounds of the Function.

Helpful, great templates
By Annonymous
I bought this and several other books on this topic of a project at work. This so far has been the most comprehensive and thoughtful book on the topic. There are plenty of templates and workflows to help a team frame their customer experience goals and is supplemented with substantial facts and figures that resonate with executives. This book will provide me with much of what i need to clearly articulate these ideas to my leadership (as i build yet another powerpoint deck to do so).

My only gripe is that while many of these themes transcend time, we need a good 2008 version of this thinking that incorporates the huge changes in the internet and pervasive connectivity. References to technology were very light, i'm assuming so as not to seem outdated in this fast moving world.
