Definitely a different take on the BDSM genre.

I was really waffling between giving this book a 3 or 4 star rating. I can’t say that I super enjoyed it necessarily, but it had me experiencing so many different feelings and reactions that I figured that in and of itself was reason enough to add to the star rating. I also have to give this not so little book some credit in assisting me in my desire to quit smoking.

There is so so so much going on this book. Because of this I’m having a hard time putting my thoughts into a good review style so I’m going to basically bullet point the parts of the story that struck me for one reason or another:

-I absolutely LOVED the idea of a bondage sorority. At first I didn’t know how to feel about the basically forced bondage, but I actually really grew to appreciate the discipline the sorority was actually going for. As this is not about a sorority with a bunch of horny girls all getting it on with each other as you would most likely be led to believe by the name of the book. This sorority is all about taking girls who are acting out at home and getting into trouble (some much worse than others), and teaching them discipline and respect. Not to mention they also focus on their “little sisters” (pledges) getting exceptionally good grades and getting healthy by eating better and exercising. Drinking and smoking are not allowed in this sorority, and after so many pages of either characters discussing how much they want to smoke, or how gross smoking is and how bad it smells, I finally decided to quit smoking myself, lol! I had already been seriously considering the idea, but with all the negative criticism on smoking in the book I finally relented and agreed that it is a horribly disgusting and smelly habit and so I’m quitting. Thanks Mistress Hu!

-Some of the tactics the big sisters use I highly disagree with. There is a lot of non-consent going on due to the little sisters basically having been duped by their parents to join the sorority. All of the little sisters had their mothers go to that sorority as well so basically that’s why they are all there. Due to the extreme nature of the sorority, it’s really only those that totally understand their scene, or were part of the sorority, that have any sway on who gets in. One of the little sisters is constantly being mummified and is made to sleep that way to assist with her weight loss. There is a lot of discussion in the book about how they make sure all the little sisters get enough food and water and that there aren’t so many distractions as to cause problems with their school work, but I still can’t help but thinking about the fact that I’m claustrophobic myself. Those kind of mental situations don’t seem to really come up in this story and I would’ve really liked to see how the big sisters reacted to a little sister if she totally refused a punishment due to the mental instability it could cause. Would they force her to be mummified if she were claustrophobic? If so then I would consider that abuse, not punishment. However there isn’t anything that comes up to tell the readers that there are these types if serious mental issues with what is going on so I’m not going to make assumptions.

-To add on to the previous statement; there is also a little sister whose big sister insists that she be called “Mommy” and treats her little sister like a baby. Like an actual baby. Diapers, bottle, the whole nine. She even insists that the little sister actually use the diaper and then “Mommy” changes her diaper and cleans her up. This may be considered a spoiler to some so here’s the tag. (view spoiler) They do end up addressing this issue but I just can’t help but think these people should be smart enough to know better. Unless of course there’s someone in the house that is purposely messing things up for the little sisters? Maybe we’ll find out in book 2.

-(view spoiler) Thank God the sorority actually does address this when she gets back from home and essentially tells her that they are taking responsibility for what happened due to them not really speaking to them to discuss the different between bondage discipline and abuse. Since these girls have never been in any sort of BDSM scenario before they had nothing to compare it against to realize that what was going on in the sorority was discipline vs. what was going at home being abuse. What I appreciated about this was the fact that those with the experience took responsibility for not teaching their little sisters properly and made sure to rectify that situation.

-This whole book (a whopping 390,000 words) is done entirely through 1st person POV with the main character, Cece. I don’t dislike 1st person POV but its very hard to do, and while I did feel it was done very well in the book, it was honestly so long that I hated being in Cece’s head all the time. I felt like most of the book was just detailing her getting up in the morning, going to class, going to her next class, coming back to the house to paint, and then going to bed. It just got really boring and tiresome at some parts.

In conclusion; there are definitely enough reasons for me to continue this series. I want to know what’s going to happen with Cece’s not so professional professor, as well as what happens on her next home trip. Unfortunately, if the next installments are as long as this one I’ll be skimming the boring day to day details.

390,000 words, holy Hannah, wish me luck, check back in a few weeks.

Apparently there's an audience for every book, sadly I wasn't it when it came to this one. The title clued me in the focus was bondage, but somehow I expected more. The story is a day by day blow of life at the Sorority, and at times I wondered if I'd accidentally backtracked and was re-reading the same chapter as many were extremely similar.

Some of the type's of gags used were new to me, and I love learning new things while reading. Big Sister, Chloe must have had an endless supply of microfoam tape! Her nickname was 'Gag girl' and she gagged the main character Cece relentlessly.

***Minor spoilers ahead! Proceed with caution***

One of Cece's fellow little sisters was assigned to a big sister into little play, much of that is told. Cece is mortified or should I say disgusted when she finds out her fellow little sister has been diapered. So much so her thoughts and comments on the topic became almost offensive.

There's a huge amount of talk about attending BDSM class, but the closest you get to see inside is the day on rope tying/bondage.

As a side note, for some reason I expected girl on girl sex, as in touching, petting, loving, sucking, fingering.... but there's nothing like that, so if you are hoping to read some hot girl on girl action you won't find it here.

One of the things that kept me reading was the hopes that Chloe and Cece (the two main characters) would become a couple. I'm not going to disclose if they did or not!

Readers into bondage, gagging, being shackled, and some humiliation, will likely enjoy this story very much. I urge you to get your hands on a copy and decide for yourself if the story is for you!

Ball Gags and Humiliation, Oh my! Excellent

Excellent story telling; highly recommended.Those of you who like f/f discipline, humiliation and particularly bondage may want to sample Mistress Hu's California Bondage Sorority, a book I "purchased" on KU. If you enjoy the books of Ashley Zacharias you will probably enjoy reading this one. For that matter, if you like the gritty story telling of Charles Dickens, you might well relish this tale.

Long, real plot, lots of discipline in the form of humiliation, bondage and pain, plus things that women seem to love: spending hours walking up and down in high hells while wearing a corset. A very tight corset. Lots of ball gags.

2/9: The above review is a bit glib. This is an excellent book. Lots of interesting, and very real, social issues are touched upon in passing. All of the main characters make mistakes, small and some huge. Even the "good" gals. Mistress Hu gets us both into the 'fly on the wall' position and inside the heads of her characters. Despite the title, lots of kink varieties appear here. Plus, because the book is long, you get sufficient time to see events unfold almost in real time.

Reuss follows up the antic infantilism of The Wasties (2002) with what might be called a documentary historical. At the novel's center is the real-life German-Jewish novelist and playwright Max Mohr; exiled from Germany in 1934, he chose to emigrate to China, leaving his wife, Käthe, and daughter, Eva, at their Bavarian home, and working as a doctor (for which he was trained) as China's war with Japan raged. The book is Reuss's explicit attempt to write Mohr back into the historical record and to understand his choices. To that end, he includes 47 actual photographs of Mohr, his family and their surroundings (some of which Reuss interprets), and Reuss also foregrounds his own place in the work. After an extended second-person address, Reuss tells his character Mohr, "I say you, but I mean me. In novels, personal pronouns can be misleading. This is not an easy idea to express, and some will call the notion absurd. But why not? Why can't I be you? Or him or her?" The results are mixed as a novel, but Reuss succeeds in giving vivid shape to Mohr's life—the major events (including possible WWII spy intrigue in China) and the mundane (taking foxglove to keep his pulse regular). Max Mohr was one of author Frederick Reuss's distant relatives, his grandfather's favorite uncle--a physician, friend of D. H. Lawrence, successful playwright, and novelist, who died mysteriously in Shanghai in 1937. Reuss has spent years searching archives for information about Mohr, whose writings were burned by the Nazis. He wants to know, especially, why Mohr left his wife and child, whom he apparently adored, in rural Wolfsgrub, Germany, and, in 1934, set out for China, alone. Using a cache of almost fifty family photographs to provide form for his novel, Reuss now reconstructs the engrossing story of Mohr and his wife Kathe, some of it from letters, much of it imagined.

The result is an insightful story of identity, as Mohr reveals who he is, who he was, and who he might have been. By alternating the setting and point of view between Mohr in Shanghai and his wife Kathe in Wolfsgrub, Reuss establishes dramatic contrasts between Kathe's rural farm life and Max's frantic urban life as he works as a physician during the Chinese civil war and China's battle against Japan. Gradually, the reader recognizes Mohr's inherent contradictions: his apolitical nature but his pragmatism about his future as a Jew in Germany; his naivete in traveling from China to Japan to climb Mount Fuji during Japan's war with China; his love for Kathe and his daughter even as he begins a new relationship; his determination to save lives in China during its war, while leaving his wife and half-Jewish daughter behind in Germany.

As time shifts back and forth, a full picture of Mohr evolves. Mohr recognizes that "he has no good choices...that no good can possibly come from any path he chooses to take," whether he stays in China, returns to his family, or moves elsewhere. "It is only the moment that is real. But it is also only the moment that passes." Ultimately, the reader realizes that the lives of Mohr and Kathe involve a "question of separate destinies, how to be together and apart at the same time."

In exceptionally clear, straightforward prose, Reuss creates an intimate portrait of Mohr and Kathe, while making thoughtful observations about life and human nature. Wartime Shanghai, with all its horror, is seen peripherally here--as it directly affects the life and thinking of Mohr--and when Mohr's story concludes in 1937, the reader is not surprised by the outcome. Ultimately, Mohr remains an enigma, a man who lived in the moment and who, like most of us, can never really be known. As author Reuss journeys into the past, he illustrates one of Kathe's observations about Mohr: "So much of who we are is also all that never was." Mary Whipple

super insightful historical novel

Jewish author Dr. Max Mohr, whose latest work The Diamond Heart had just been serialized, leaves his native Nazi Germany for war torn China. On the morning he is to depart from his home in the Tegernsee Valley, his weary wife Kathe is sad as if she knows something about her spouse's journey. She wonders why not some place closer like Prague unless they are to remain apart. Their young daughter Eva is excited as her father says his two women will join him soon, but though mom does not dissuade her otherwise she feels that is youthful foolishness. There he becomes a physician in Shanghai while his daughter waits word from him to join him and his wife waits for something else.

Though feeling more like a memoir narrative told in alternating chapters in China (Max's adventures) and Germany (the tales of Kathe and Eva) than a novel, biographical fiction readers will enjoy this interesting look at the highly regarded playwright. The story line is pieced together from family photographs that Frederick Reuss saw with approximately fifty included (part of why the book reads more like a memoir). This is a well written and fascinating period piece that enables readers to compare mid 1930s Germany and China with characters that seem so genuine that the audience can feel the pain of Kathe and the change from euphoria to doubter in Eve. Many readers will be disappointed that Mr. Reuss finally cannot explain why Mohr didn't take his family. Still this is a super insightful historical novel.

From Germany to Shanghai

Max Mohr was a German Jewish writer and doctor who left Germany for Shanghai in 1934 and died in Shanghai in 1937. This is a fictionalized account of his story, full of actual photographs that follow the plot as Mohr recounts his life in the German countryside where he lives on a farm with his wife, Kathe and daughter, Eva. It's an idyllic life but fraught with despair as Mohr's books are banned by the Nazis and he is forced to leave before the Holocaust starts. But he finds war in China as well when the Japanese attack and as a doctor he spends time treating casualties, and eventually becomes one himself when he dies from a heart attack, at least that's what we're told, but he may have been killed because he was Jewish. In China, he falls in love with a nurse and they travel to Japan for a holiday. Mohr actually stays upbeat throughout, always ready with a humorous comment for anyone he comes in contact with. He's not really concerned with his Jewishness although the trauma he experiences is something he reflects on and becomes part of his philosophy, which mixes upbeat humor with the emptiness of life in a cruel, cruel world. Kathe isn't Jewish and remains in Germany, tending the farm and living amicably, but constantly thinking about Mohr, reminiscing about their time together and wondering if they will ever see other again. The book combines the events of their lives with their perceptions of them, which are sometimes philosophical, sometimes bittersweet.

Red River Gorge greatest climbing book ever!

This is an amazing guide. It is so easy to find approaches with this guide and all the directions are from Miguel's. Star system is spot on all the classics are 4 and 5 stars. Great for all skill levels really easy to use. And it even tells you when are the best times to climb at certain walls. Great for planning successful days of climbing.

Simple--this is the best guide available for RRG climbing. A little expensive, but worth it. Durable cover and pages (cover also functions as bookmark). Sectioned off well. Good maps and driving/approach directions. Accurate for # of bolts and length of climbs (not sure why some climbing books don't include these two very important pieces of info). Tick list by trad/sport and grade is a great feature, although a few climbs in Muir Valley are missing in the 2ed.

Best climbing guidebook I have ever purchased

I just bought this in preparation for my first trip to Red River Gorge, and since I haven't climbed there yet, my review is necessarily limited. However, this guidebook is very well organized, printed on glossy paper, and has extremely good photographs throughout. The production quality alone makes it the best guidebook I have in my collection. Information about the climbs is thorough and has allowed me to plan my upcoming trip to get the most bang for the buck.

Grade 2-5-Sneed has chosen 15 tales to retell and illustrate. The art, done in watercolor, colored pencil, and acrylic, is a standout. The animals, while realistically proportioned, are endowed with the character and personality that connect them to the human foibles that the tales illuminate. The palette is both varied and vibrant, and the artist has posed his creatures in a range of inventive yet possible positions. The text, however, is not as impressive. The use of colloquialisms in the dialogue-"golly," "holy cow," etc.-seems at odds with the more formal language of the narratives. Libraries who have invested in Jerry Pinkney's Aesop's Fables (SeaStar, 2000), which features 60 tales and has a better meld of text and illustration, may consider this an additional purchase.

K-Gr. 3. Aesop's fables have been retold for centuries, and there's no end in sight. Sneed offers 15 retellings (the sixteenth, the "Tortoise and the Hare," is wordless) in sometimes jarringly contemporary language but keeps the classic morals at the end of each. The lazy grasshopper tells the ants to "Take a load off," and the rooster soon to become the eagle's lunch cries, "What?! Nobody wants a piece of me?" Each fable is a double-page, full-bleed spread, and the text is brief, a few paragraphs at most. Watercolor, colored pencil, and acrylic paintings are fully realized; the animals are depicted in surreal detail but with exaggeratedly human expressions. Note the supercilious grin on the face of the fox, who is flattering the crow into dropping the cheese in its beak. Not as elegant as Doris Orgel's The Lion and the Mouse and Other Aesop's Fables (2000) but not as serious either. GraceAnne DeCandido

My mother bought this book for my daughter because it has a huge picture of the tortoise and the hare on the cover, but the story is not actually in the book. She asked me several times how my daughter liked the tortoise and the hare until I told her it wasn't included in the book. She had to see for herself since it is so obviously depicted on the cover. She ended up buying another book that actually did have the tortoise and the hare.

illustrations are captivating

As other reviewers have noted, the text of the fables is written in a contemporary style, but with oddly dated slang. The collection also omits some favorite fables (i.e., the tortoise and the hare is illustrated but not retold, Androcles and the Lion is not included at all...). However, the illustrations really draw young readers into the tales. I would have purchased this book for the illustrations alone. Enjoy!

I love this program because it is easy to understand, it is very simple and it goes straight to the points. Jay Abraham is a good teacher, because he doesn't feel this program with non-sense. He will teach you many awesome principals that will help you grow your business and your career.

It took me a long time before I decided to buy this Marketing System by Jay Abraham because I really want to know whether ROI (return of investment) that I would put into this program would pay off and also I didn't really know how Jay Abraham was until I bought one of his programs "Your Secret Wealth."

I think, the Mastermind Marketing program is one of the best programs out there that has ever been produced beside the Piranha Marketing and the the Guerrilla marketing programs because Jay Abraham shared so many techniques, tips and answers that I can apply right away to my business and they really work.

For some time, I'd been looking for a life breakthrough that is at least on the caliber of what I had experienced with Tony Robbins' work, many years ago.

This 6 CD program, has so much information that if you want to grow as someone who is doing what you love doing, while you simultaneously profit and enhance the lives of those around you, you can't afford to not follow Jay Abraham's work.

He has to, in other words, cease to be the doer, accepting all the uncertainty that goes with his being as a mortal, as a creature uncertainly placed between the two poles of birth and death. But not before dying before his actual death can he have the patience, the patience all passive, to live his mortality and be his mortality, undoing thereby both birth and death and what lies between the two, his so called life.

Excellent book for understanding spirituality

Mahatma Mangatram was a completely enlightened spiritual master. He was born in November 1903 and passed away in February 1954.
He is well known in India and there are many ashrams in India. He has very good literature in Hindi. This book is translation of his Hindi book named Samta Prakash. This book is full of spiritual gems. The translation is done by Somraj Gupta, a lecturer in English in Delhi University.

He graduated from Brigham Young University Idaho, where he studied fine art and illustration. He and his wife, Emily, have two children and live in Washington, where he enjoys working as a freelance illustrator. A cute story about service!

Our world is filled with angels who reach out to help those in need. This is a great story to teach children about the value of serving others. It is also beautifully illistrated. I highly recommend this book to any one with kids young or old.

Lovely Book

I got this book from the library and really enjoyed reading it with my children. It is a very touching story about finding joy in serving others. I loved that it showed the angels helping the girls in their service. The book is beautifully illustrated. My children especially like all the different angels the girls made at the end. I loved the lessons taught in the book about giving service all through the year. This is a book I plan to buy for my own library!

This book is excellent! It's such a great way to teach young kids about kindness and serving others. We don't always have to do something major to make a difference. I read this book for the first time as an adult, but even then it made me really stop and think about what it means to be selfless and serve other people. These girls learned while they were serving other people that they could actually become closer, and they were able to reach out and help them in the process. I think we would all do well to try to be "snow angels" wherever we are, no matter the time of year.
