The Body Sacred, by Dianne Sylvan

When you look in the mirror, do you see a Goddess? For anyone who's experienced a "fat day" or wished a doctor could make them younger, Wiccan Dianne Sylvan speaks candidly about overcoming body hatred and offers a spiritual path back to Divine femininity.

Sharing her own struggles with poor body image and self-acceptance, Sylvan explores how the impossible standard of female beauty has developed and endured. Emphasizing the Mother, the Healer, the Lover, and other archetypes of one's relationship with the sacred body, the author provides a uniquely Wiccan approach to achieving a healthy, new self-perception as Goddess.

Praise:
"This topical guide to reclaiming a positive self-image, which builds on foundations presented in Sylvan's earlier work and is written in a very personal and approachable style, is not imbued with self-help jargon and platitudes but with the author's hard-won self-respect and perspective."―LIBRARY JOURNAL

"Marrying cultural critique with user-friendly how-to, [Sylvan] urges readers to reject society's insistence that they spend countless hours and billions of dollars trying to look thin and youthful. Rather, says Sylvan, women should embrace their bodies for what they are―incarnations of the Goddess. Above all, this book is practical... What distinguishes this book more than anything is Sylvan's sense of humor―she's tackling a serious topic, but she'll have readers laughing from page one."―PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

From Publishers Weekly
Americans are not just engaged in wars on terror and drugs, says Wiccan priestess Sylvan. We are also waging a war against our bodies, trying to prevent our breasts from sagging, our faces from wrinkling and our buns from expanding. Sylvan, a self-proclaimed fattie, has had enough. Marrying cultural critique with user-friendly how-to, she urges readers to reject society's insistence that they spend countless hours and billions of dollars trying to look thin and youthful. Rather, says Sylvan, women should embrace their bodies for what they are—incarnations of the Goddess. Above all, this book is practical. Sylvan suggests exercises and rituals designed to help readers live more comfortably in their own skins: envision five women who hate their bodies, and then note that these women probably look perfectly fine; meditate on Artemis, the divine huntress, an "intensely physical goddess"; tape a copy of Maya Angelou's poem "Phenomenal Woman" to the mirror; dance or take up tai chi. What distinguishes this book more than anything is Sylvan's sense of humor—she's tackling a serious topic, but she'll have readers laughing from page one. Pull-out quotes in the margins offer inspiring wisdom from women ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt to Alanis Morissette. (Oct.)

For every woman who has felt not enough
By M. Anastasia
This book is simply a must have. Even if you are not a pagan you can get many positive input and realizations about how society and the media pray on our insecurities to make us buy more and more stuff. Now if you are a pagan then you can get even more help by reading through this book. The author writes with humor and provides with the necessary tools to get back your inner strength, to regain confidence and to realize that we are unique manifestations of the Divine. We need to stop hating our body and start treat it as it deserves: with respect and love. I found it amusing and deeply helpful.

The most inspirational and snarky 'self-help' book out there.
By Clair Smith
I absolutely love this book, so much so that I've purchased it not only for myself but for friends and family members also. It's witty and easy to relate to. It's not one of those elitest "get your act together" books that make you all inspired until about 3 chapters in when you realize that you'll never be a size 4, and eat only green foods, and avoid all toxins by not leaving your house without your mask on. ;-)

A good, solid inspirational book about loving you for who you are. And improving yourself because you want to, not because society tells you to.

Love it.

Advance your spiritual practice and body image to boot!
By Lori Holden
Dianne has an amazing writing style that feels like you are talking to a friend. This book assumes that you have a basic understand of Wicca and perhaps have begun to establish your own practice. Her rituals don't feel rigid and otherworldly; they feel designed so that the practitioner is really working for herself/himself in a very down to earth way. The concepts are applicable to real life and really helped me feel an integration of spiritual practice into my daily life.

Most design engineers are tasked to design against failure, and one of the biggest causes of product failure is failure of the material due to fatigue/fracture. From leading experts in fracture mechanics, this new text provides new approaches and new applications to advance the understanding of crack initiation and propagation. With applications in composite materials, layered structures, and microelectronic packaging, among others, this timely coverage is an important resource for anyone studying or applying concepts of fracture mechanics.

  • Concise and easily understood mathematical treatment of crack tip fields (chapter 3) provides the basis for applying fracture mechanics in solving practical problems
  • Unique coverage of bi-material interfacial cracks (chapter 8), with applications to commercially important areas of composite materials, layered structures, and microelectronic packaging
  • A full chapter (chapter 9) on the cohesive zone model approach, which has been extensively used in recent years to simulate crack propagation
  • A unified discussion of fracture criteria involving nonlinear/plastic deformations

There are much better books on the subject.
By Philly Dave
I used this book for a graduate level fracture mechanics class. It contains a lot of theory, but no practical problem solving. It has a problem set at the end of each chapter, but I don't remember seeing very many, if any example problems in the book.

Every student in my class complained about the book, so I wasn't the only one.

If you want a decent book, buy Anderson's Fracture Mechanics - Fundamentals and Applications. Then you may want to take a look at this book for a more in depth look at the theory.

A resource for the advanced user
By Steven
This book is definitely written at the PhD graduate student level. I would not recommend that this book be used as anyone's first book on the subject of fracture mechanics. That being said, this is book contains a substantial amount of insight on specialty facture mechanics analysis topics that are not widely available in other fracture mechanics books.

Don't spend your money on this book.
By Airplane Guy
I wholeheartedly agree with the other review on this page. This book is too concise to learn anything from it; rather I see it as a resource for someone who has already taken a course on Fracture Mechanics. Explanations are not always clear, and there are hardly any example problems worked out in the text. This lack of example problems makes the end-of-chapter problems extremely difficult and frustrating to do. My professor also had to post a list of corrections for several typos in this book.

Overall, I have had to deal with/seen several textbooks written by C.T. Sun and they all seem to have the same problem: too concise in their explanations and too few example problems and applications.

Ada Plus Data Structures is the most up-to-date, student-friendly Ada text available. Using the newly updated Ada 2005, the text introduces and discusses such familiar topics as strings, sets, stacks, queues, lists, trees, graphs, and much more. The recurring theme throughout the text is modeling with levels of abstraction, presenting each class from three different perspectives: their specification, their abstraction, and their implementation. Using this approach, the authors stress computer science theory and software engineering principles including information hiding, data encapsulation, data abstraction, stepwise refinement, and visual aids. With its object-oriented presentation, real-world applications, and traditional Dale Pedagogy, Ada Plus Data Structures is a pleasure to read and learn from.

This is just what I was looking for in a 2nd Ada book. I'm about halfway at this point

It assumes the basic stuff then follows the typical data structures path from records to pointers to stacks and queues and trees and graphs. I had one just like it years ago for a java course that I promptly forgot about at the end of the semester. This one manages to stay a little more interesting

Good Textbook
By Stephen Graves
As a freshman at an upstate New York state university, this was the textbook for the second sequential computer science course. Of course, the choice was obvious: McCormick being a former professor at the school. At that point, I was a beginning programmer, having already taken basic programming classes. This book, however, is responsible for my now-firm grasp of data structures and algorithms. Both dynamic and static structures, complex and simple, this book is the primer for an understanding of data structures in Ada.
As an Ada textbook alone, it has its faults: it assumes the reader has a knowledge of the programming language, but from that point teaches a method of programming that enforces good stylistic patterns and strong code. Now, when it comes to algorithm layout in my position as a design engineer, I turn to Ada first for a comprehensible design structure, and then port it to other languages as necessary.

Yea, it really has a 3.5" floppy disk.
By Devin
I bough this thinking "there's no way it's gonna come with a floppy disk." BOY WAS I WRONG! I couldn't believe when it showed up and inside was a brand-new, fully sealed paper envelope with a 3.5" floppy disk in it. I was ecstatic. I searched for hours looking for my old USB floppy drive so I could see if the disk still worked, but I never did locate it.

Oh, and I also had one of the authors as my professor for this class. If you don't know Ada to start, you really shouldn't get this book. It doesn't teach you Ada, it only teaches you how to implement data structures using Ada.
