From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7–In 1921, when her father is sent to a tuberculosis sanitarium, motherless 13-year-old Celeste takes the train from her home in Raleigh, NC, to Harlem, NY, to live with her glamorous Aunt Valentina. She soon finds herself scrubbing theater floors with Val and living in a windowless studio apartment. When Val lands a spot in the chorus of a groundbreaking Broadway musical, Celeste mixes with African-American celebrities until she is called back home to care for her abusive Aunt Society, who has suffered a stroke. This enjoyable story is crammed full of well-researched historical details. Celeste evolves from a wide-eyed, naive, bashful girl into a young woman unafraid to speak up for herself and follow her dream to be a doctor. Aunti Val is a self-absorbed yet charismatic woman struggling to make her way, too often at the expense of Celeste's needs. Tate deftly handles the complexities of their relationship. She draws her characters with charming humor and multidimensional candor. At times her tone is cloying, though, and the dialogue tends to lay on a Gee whiz! aspect with a heavy hand. She loads the book with references to real historical figures and events, sometimes to the detriment of narrative flow. The predictable plot aside, however, fans of historical fiction will stick with Celeste, eager to see her true blossoming at the end. Gail Carson Levine's Dave at Night (HarperCollins, 1999) is a faster-paced novel set during the Harlem Renaissance.–Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS

From Booklist
After her mother dies and her father falls ill, 13-year-old Celeste is sent to her aunt Valentina, a singer and dancer in Harlem. Leaving Raleigh, North Carolina, is hard, and once in New York City, she is upset to learn that her aunt isn't a famous performer after all. Barely scraping by, Valentina asks Celeste to scrub floors for money. The Harlem Renaissance has begun, though, and Valentina introduces Celeste to the many legendary artists who congregate at the local cafe. Then Celeste is called back to North Carolina to help care for an elderly aunt, and she meets her challenges with the strength, realism, and courage she discovered during her stay in New York. Celeste's encounters with famous African Americans often feel contrived, but readers will connect with her strong, regional voice ("I felt lower than a snail's tail"), her ambitions, and the enormous responsibilities she confronts at such a young age. Both sobering and inspiring, Tate's novel is a moving portrait of growing up black and female in 1920s America. Gillian Engberg

Celeste's Stellar Story
By Kemie Nix
A motherless teenager at thirteen, Celeste lives with her beloved, consumptive father and abrasive Aunt Society in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1921. Despite Aunt Society's extreme strictness and terrible cooking, CeCe's life is relatively happy. She has supportive friends and recognition for her school work. Although her circumstances are modest, CeCe is talented and ambitious. She plays a mean violin, which she calls "DeDe," and plans to become a doctor. Her only other close relative is an aunt who shows up periodically from what Cece believes is a glamorous existence in Harlem.

Cece's circumstances are worse than modest, they are exceedingly precarious. When her father is sent to a sanatorium, she is bundled off to New York to live with Aunt Valentina. Auntie meets her at the train station, but instead of taking her to a beautiful home, she takes her to a theater. This is not the expected theater where her aunt is a star. This is a theater where they both scrub the stage on their hands and knees until CeCe is so exhausted, she keeps falling down on the way to her aunt's tiny, windowless apartment. Her introduction to Harlem is harsh indeed. As a former companion to an opera singer, however, her aunt does know many of the people who are part of the Harlem Renaissance. Gradually, despite the grinding work, CeCe is introduced to them.

Filled with colorful characters - including Aunt Society - the author brings to vivid life a wonderful protagonist. CeCe seems absolutely real. She is ultimately presented with an ethical decision that would stagger a wise adult. Played out against the backdrop of the segregated south with its myriad oppressions and Harlem during the Renaissance period with its myriad chances, CeCe is influenced by both but overwhelmed by neither. A strong young heroine in a stellar story.

Maddy Blume, an ambitious young art buyer for a Manhattan hedge fund, is desperate to track down a priceless painting by Marcel Duchamp, the most influential artist of the twentieth century.

The discovery of a woman's decapitated body thrusts criminal investigator Alan Powell into a search for the same painting, with its enigmatic image of a headless nude.

The murderous race is on. And in the lead is an insidious secret society intent on reclaiming the painting for reasons of its own--and by any means necessary....

Decent But Confusing Thriller
By Fred Rayworth
Since I don't know diddly about either the art or finance world, I found much of this thriller confusing and hard to follow. The author obviously knows his stuff about both subjects but the more he dug into and combined both elements into the story, the harder it was for me to follow things. It was when the action took place that I found things more enjoyable. Luckily, the story carried on with plenty of action and plot twists to keep me interested.

There were a few places where I came close to skipping paragraphs, though, but I stuck with it in case I missed something key to the story. There was one element, though, where he combined elements that I don't want to give away due to spoilers. I thought he did a great job in that respect.

When detective Powell was first introduced, I was confused as to whether the story was taking place in America or England and it wasn't until a bit later that I realized where he was actually located.

Overall, I liked the characters and the plot twists and the way the story ended up was satisfying. The author wrote in solid third person, though he tended to head hop with abandon which was mildly irritating in spots.

I'm not sure if I'll go for another one of his books as I'm not a big art or finance fan, but I can see he has a lot of fans from the other reviews here. If that's your thing, I'd recommend this story.

Intrigue
By Amazon Customer
Complex, intriguing read with a myriad of characters within a 3 plotline structure. I definitely had to keep my wits about me with this one; I needed a score card to keep all the players straight in my own head.

Disappearing and reappearing artwork, Russian mafiyeh, a dead ballerina, art hedge fund, international crime investigator and secret societies are all involved in and around the sale of Etant Donné, a very controversial painting by Marcel DuChamp, a twentieth century painter who was himself a bit of a mystery. For a debut novel the author sure managed to keep all these balls in the air while providing one heck of an intriguing and exciting story.

Any reader could safely assume that members of the Russian Mafiyeh would be brutal thugs but you'd think people in the art world would be sociable, kind types. No so here as some of these characters are anything but. Ruthless is one description that comes to mind. Their passion for art and the art world knows no boundaries; theft, murder, betrayal and backstabbing are the order of the day. No one is what they seem on the surface. Be prepared for a monumental twist at the end. For thriller or conspiracy fans, this should be high on your listThe Icon Thief

A fascinating, seedy world...
By InterAlya
Highly recommended for the art lover and amateur sleuth alike. Nevala-Lee will take you by the hand and guide you into the seedy back streets and under the boardwalks of New York's Brighton Beach. You'll lose yourself in a world of art heists, mafia murders, secret societies and criminal investigations; a world which will hold you in its grip until the very last page. Prepare to be stumped and riveted.

For the die-hard Sandman fan only
By Trevor Burnham
If you already have all 4 volumes of The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1 on your shelf, you'll be pleased to know that this finely-crafted collection, though thinner than any of the Sandman volumes, will look equally pleasing on your shelf. However, if you're not a collector with money to burn, you should think carefully. This is a very expensive comic book, and disappointingly short on content.

There are two issues of The Sandman in here (#8 and #20), a handful of short pieces (only one of which, "Death and Venice," memorable for me), and a hundred pages of miscellany (sketches, promotional pieces, a curious pamphlet about AIDS called "Death Talks About Life"). All of this felt like fluff to me. The meat of the volume is two 3-part stories: "The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life." I was indifferent to the latter, but "The High Cost of Living" is a very solid short story in the classic Neil Gaiman tradition. Fortunately, it's available in a much cheaper volume: Death: The High Cost of Living

If you're on a budget, you can live without Absolute Death.

Peachy keen?
By Ralph Jenkins
Yes, this book is a bit overpriced if you pay full list price. However, like the other volumes in DC's "Absolute" series, it is very high quality. Since the two Death miniseries ("The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life") were only three issues apiece, some padding was needed to make this into an Absolute. It was originally to be called "The Compleat Death", but it was later changed into an Absolute, perhaps so it would match the Absolute Sandman volumes on the shelf (which it does). Note that if you have Absolute Sandman Vol. 1, two stories in that volume also appear here (#8 and #20), along with the Death story from the "Endless Nights" graphic novel, a few short vignettes, the Death Talks About Sex PSA pamphlet, the Death Gallery (which benefits the most from the larger format), a merchandise gallery and Neil Gaiman's complete script for Sandman #8 (with the original pencils). "The High Cost of Living" (which has been relettered for this edition) is the highlight of this book; it is here that penciler Chris Bachalo created the version of the character that would become most familiar to comics fans for the next decade. The original printing of Death: The High Cost of Living #1 erroneously split up a 2-page sequence (the left half of a splash page appeared on the right, and you had to turn the page to see the right side of the picture). No such problems here. This is the definitive Death collection. It is probably not worth $100, but if you buy it with a discount from Amazon or otherwise can pick it up as a discount, it may be worth it. Note: I don't think anything has been recolored, with the exception of Sandman #8 (which was also in Absolute Sandman Vol. 1).

worth every penny
By M. Buso
So I won't waste time recapping what is in this collection.. the other reviewers cover it pretty well. However, I will call attention to 1) the astounding beauty that the larger Absolute format brings to the work, 2) the complete-ness you feel in this collection (its got all the major Death in it - if you were a Death-goth kid you may not have wanted to buy Absolute Sand 1 just for the 2 Death issues, so they are included here - I see that as very reader-friendly of DC), 3) how great it is in connection with the 4 Sandman collections - amazingly amazing. Gaiman is an incarnation in his own right, and 4) how much I love DC for including the Death / AIDS pamphlet. It is surprisingly hard to find, and yet of great interest as an historical comic artifact and something that is still relevant to this day - using comics as education never gets old, especially when it promotes understanding and tolerance. If you're a Gaiman fan, a Death fan, a Sandman fan, or all of the above, buy this - just don't pay full price (it's worth it, but save yourself some dough, eh!)

Review
"A first-rate narrative account of a fascinating period in European history. The inclusion of the British Isles is especially welcome as is the due weight devoted to eastern Europe. Sturdy is alive to the varieties and ambiguities of European history in this period, and is not seduced by easy talk of the development of the modern state or simplistic assessments of absolutism." Jeremy Black, University of Exeter

"Dr Sturdy has written an excellent introduction to seventeenth-century Europe for the student approaching the subject for the first time. He supplies in a lucid description the factual evidence essential to the formulation of thematic or analytical arguments about the period." Lionel K. J. Glassey, University of Glasgow

"Sturdy's book is organized around geographical regions (including the British Isles) with a break at 1660 to consider some themes... a comprehansive and factually accurate a narrative [which] is a considerable achievement. Sturdy is to be commended for producing a sound textbook, which must have been the product of much labour." Graham Derby, King Edward VI School, Southampton

From the Back Cover
This book presents a narrative history of Europe, including Britain and Ireland, from the beginning of the seventeenth century to the Treaty of Nystadt in 1721. It is organized around geographical regions, paying as much attention to northern and eastern Europe, as to western and southern.

The narrative is divided into two sections, supported by maps, illustrations and other supporting material. The first covers the period from 1600 to1660 and is followed by an assessment of the themes that emerge from this section. The second takes up the story from 1660 and follows it through to 1721. The conclusion reflects on the most significant themes of the post-1660 decades.

Whilst the core of the book is devoted to the political and diplomatic evolution of Europe in the seventeenth century, the author also integrates the visual arts and sciences into the discussion and assesses their influence on the wider historical development of the continent.
