Marital dilemma (4.2 *s)

This book is remindful of the author's earlier "Couples," which too involved adulterous relations among suburban couples. However, the focus of this book is far more narrow involving only two families and is much more dialog intensive giving a clearer window into the full range of emotions experienced by these people.

Jerry and Ruth Conant and Richard and Sally Mathias are thirty-something's with three children in each family. The focus of the book is the affair of Jerry and Sally. At times they seem certain of their love and eventual marriage. Yet others are involved for whom genuine affections exist and doubts continually arise, not only as to practicalities but also as to understanding their true and long-term feelings. Some of the scenes are lengthy and it is fair to say can be tedious. The dialog seems endless and repetitious, constantly reviewing the same points and feelings - and it all seems very realistic. The dialog really draws the reader into their dilemma.

The book is really quite insightful concerning marriage in so far as it goes, but it is inconclusive. What to do when a seemingly better marital fit arises after many years is a subject far larger than one novel can solve.

Sally and Jerry, Jerry and Ruth, Ruth and Richard, Richard and Sally

In the Updike oeuvre, MARRY ME is not unlike Couples and even Villages, as it explores infidelity and the search for happiness in Northeastern commuter towns. Like COUPLES, MARRY Me features thirty-somethings with young children who gather for weekend drinks and weirdly ecstatic volleyball. Like VILLAGES, it has a selfish and unfaithful male protagonist and even a wife in car accident. These books, like the RABBIT novels, share a lot--in this case, a sensibility, a suburban setting, and an underlying social vocabulary. They are somewhat different looks at the same jewel.

In MARRY ME, there are many fine sections. For example, in the second chapter, "The Wait", Updike perfectly captures the frantic helplessness of trying to get on successive planes as a standby. Likewise, in the third chapter, "The Reacting of Ruth", there is an absolutely pitch-perfect picture of a family in crisis.

But within these two chapters, there is also what I experienced as two mediocre plays. In "The Wait", this is the snippet conversations between the lovers Jerry and Sally. These alternate between confusion (deliberate by Updike) and empty rhetoric about love and fate (also deliberate). Likewise, in "The Reacting of Ruth" there is brilliant dispute between Jerry and Ruth, his wife, with Jerry often making exactly the perfect point to further or justify his position. But for me, these conversations were unreal in their hair-splitting precision.

I'm not a professor. But it's my impression that in the mid-seventies, when MARRY ME was published, Updike, Roth, and other literary authors employed such dialogue. Here, these authors would create realistic social settings with believable dynamics between the characters. This was real. But then, their characters were mouthpieces, not for ideological purposes but so that the author could identify the subtleties in their actions and beliefs. Even now, some of Philip Roth reads this way, with Roth, basically, holding your face to his conclusions. What I'm saying is that this is a literary style that, in retrospect, doesn't look too successful.

Similarly, the fourth chapter of this book, "The Reacting of Richard", also has the elements of a bad play, but for different reasons. In this case, Updike unwinds an affair, showing its angry consequences. Here, his story and interaction seem absolutely true. But this chapter is also only about this unwinding, with Richard, the cuckold, ranting, and others adjusting to his fury. In this case, the chapter has all the qualities of real life--that is, a situation dominated by a loud bore. After a while, it gets tiresome.

Nonetheless, MARRY ME is an engaging book. This is because narrative is an art and Updike is definitely a master at involving his readers and getting them to turn pages. Actually, this is an attribute of Updike's work that I depend on. You see, whenever my reading is stalled, I pull a Flashman novel or something by Updike off the shelf. Somehow, Fraser and Updike renew my pleasure in reading and I'm ready for more.

Admittedly, MARRY ME is not Updike at his best. But it's as good, if not better, than most of the highly hyped new novels that publishers say show the promise of greatness. With Updike, even in his lesser work, greatness is always apparent. For example:

"Beyond the green railing of the promenade a beach curved into a distance where what appeared to be a fort of a fragile pink overhung the glistening steel of the sea; the beach was entirely of pebbles, loose washed pebbles in whose minuscule caves and crevices the ocean musically sighed as through the gills of an organ."

Or...

"The clouds materialized earlier than usual; little upright puffs at first, like puffs of smoke from a locomotive starting its run around the horizon, then clouds increasingly structural and opaque, castles, continents that, overhead, grew as they moved, keeping the sun behind them..."

Updike has faults. But, how can you not like the guy?

A tad dated

I wont rehash the story here as other reviewers have done a good job. I enjoy Updike and if your're new to him, I recommend starting with his short stories or the Rabbit series rather than with "Marry Me". The good points of the novel were the descriptions of life in Connecticut and DC in the early 1960's, the Updike style (descriptive and introspective),the quick page-turning quality and the insights into happiness and married life. The novel is the story of marital infidelity and its effects on two families. It was probably very insightful when first published in 1970 but this is a field that has been well plowed since then. The stories of John Cheever come to mind. I agree with the reviewers who noted some scenes verged on tediousness. Probably the best drawn aspect in my view was how the relationship between Jerry and Sally was so strongly based on feelings and how evanescent strong feelings can be. Not something you want to base major life changing decisions on. Or do you?

Spolier alert:
I don't really understand the ending. Or rather, I understand it all except the Wyoming part. I gather that part never really happened.

About the Author

Michael Rectenwald is Master Teacher in Global Liberal Studies at New York University. His articles have appeared in several journals and anthologies, including the British Journal for the History of Science, Endeavour, College Composition and Communication, and George Eliot in Context (Cambridge UP). Rectenwald is also author of Nineteenth-Century British Secularism: Science, Religion, and Literature (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), and co-editor of Global Secularisms in a Post-Secular Age (De Gruyter, 2015).

Lisa Carl is Associate Professor in the Department of Language and Literature at North Carolina Central University. Her work has been published in such books and journals as CLASH!: Superheroic Yet Sensible Strategies for Teaching Students the New Literacies Despite the Status Quo, American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and Whitman’s and Dickinson’s Contemporaries: An Anthology of Their Verse. Takes me back to 6th grade!

All I can remember from my middle school classes is making cootie catchers with my friends and then sneaking in a turn during class. Love that I can reintroduce this fond childhood memory to my daughter (but I will have to make sure that she doesn't follow in my footsteps). Will definitely utilize the blank ones to teach her the tools of the trade. This book is a fantastic addition to your coffee table and makes a great hostess gift, not to mention a great conversation starter!

Great book! Here's a suggestion for how to get the pages out without tearing...

This book is a lot of fun! I was a little worried that it would be too cheesy, but it has a nice balance between cheesy and actually really funny. Not all of them are kid friendly though, so if you're looking for something for a younger person then I would not necessarily buy this book. However if you'd like to have some silly fun with your friends, it's great!
The only real issue is that the pages are not perforated, making them difficult to tear out neatly! Since I'm a little bit of a perfectionist, I figured out a way to get them out with relative ease and in good shape, and since I'm nice, I'm going to share it with you.

Now I did include the video, but there are a few things I would like to add that I forgot to mention and points I'd like to emphasize.

SAFETY & Notes

1) I'm going to emphasize again, when making the cuts do not cut toward your body! I was holding the book so that the spine was parallel to my body, so that I was cutting from left to right and not towards me.

2) I used my craft table, which regularly gets dinged and cut up, but if you want to cut on a surface you don't want to destroy, then put down some sort of cutting board first. You can use one from your kitchen or you can use one made for crafting. Just make sure it's a couple inches longer than the book, and place the book so that there are a few inches towards where your cut is going to end for the blade to dip into if necessary.
Please do NOT cut on a soft surface. First of all you're likely to actually cut into your pillow or your couch, and second since the surface could shift while you're cutting, you're more likely to injure yourself. (Don't have a worktable or cutting board for some reason? Go outside, sit down on the ground, and do it on the concrete!)

3) Please do NOT let children or even teenagers do this without supervision! It's so easy for that knife to slip and cut them, and I don't want to see anybody get hurt.

4) Similar to number three, be careful how hard you press down on the box cutter. But DO make sure to hold the book itself down firmly against the work surface while you're cutting. Also, you'll notice that I kept my hand that was holding the book down several inches from the spine to reduce the risk of cutting my hand.

5) Take your time! It's safer to not press as hard with the cutter and go a little slower then to try and cut through 10 pages at once. If you're not 100% percent comfortable then don't try to do more than a few pages at a time! I got this done in under 30 minutes, BUT I'm used to working with sharp craft and power tools frequently and have been doing so for over 15 years.

6) You do not have to do the entire book in one sitting. In fact you can only do the pages you want when you want them. I did the entire book because I wanted to store the whole thing in the pictured plastic envelope.

7) I found this was much easier to do while standing then while sitting. It allows you to apply greater pressure when cutting, and I was able to make my cuts straighter.

I hope this helped if plan to buy this book or if you've had this book but were having issues getting the pages out. Have fun and be safe!

This is a great and fun find! Transfers you back to childhood instantly. What a great way to introduce fun back into your everyday life and have a few laughs. Love this book just bought it for myself and will buy more to send out as gifts.

It has been updated to include the most recent NANDA International nursing diagnoses, outcomes classifications, and nursing interventions classifications. The companion website offers a care planner with a set of 33 nursing diagnoses and interventions, plus 70 pathophysiology animations. Haugen teaches at Samuel Merritt University. Great for Care Plans

Before buying a Care Plan book, I went to a local bookstore and reviewed about 15 books. This one was by far the best one for me. You can look up by the Nursing Diagnosis Care or a specific disease and find your Care Plan. Listed are Subjective and Objective results, Risk Factors, Desired Outcomes, Nursing Assessment and it's rationale and lastly, therapeutic nursing interventions and their rationale. This book was $56 at B&N, but I was able to get one slightly used for just $26. Well worth the investment. Coincidentally, it is the same book that is recommended by my Nursing Program.

I just received this and used it for 2 care plans - I have about 5 care plan books and this one is the best - it is set up by NANDA diagnosis as well as another section by illness - it has good patho reasons for the interventions - it's not only useful for writing a care plan but it would be useful to use at clinical rotation.

Don't buy Kindle version!!

The E-book is TERRIBLE!! Its missing whole chapters! I have the hard copy and compared it to the Kindle version, its not right at all, very difficult to use too. If you're thinking about purchasing this book, stick with the hard copy! (which is GREAT)

About the Author

Ian Renshaw is Senior Lecturer in the School of Human Movement Studies at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. He has special interest in the enhancement of sports performance via the application of a non-linear pedagogy. Currently he works with the AIS/Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence as a skill acquisition consultant.

Keith Davids is Professor of Motor Control and Head of the School of Human Movement Studies at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Over the past 25 years, he has published six books and numerous chapters and journal articles while holding research and teaching positions in Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

Geert J.P. Savelsbergh is Professor in the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences at VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. He has special interest in the visual regulation of movements, especially in peak performance. About the Author

Abdelwahab Kharab is an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Abu Dhabi University. His research interests include numerical analysis and simulation for the numerical solution of partial differential equations that arise in science and engineering.

Ronald B. Guenther is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Oregon State University. His research interests include mathematically modeling deterministic systems and the ordinary and partial differential equations that arise from these models.

A good text to start with.

The book provides a solid start for Numerical Methods, especially for those learning Matlab while having their first introductory course in Numerical Methods.

My recommendation is to read through the chapter and play with the code(the book comes with a CD with all m-files used in the book on it). If you are just learning Matlab, try changing the code to do different things and see what happens. Create an m-file or two that checks the slope across the curve created and plot a few of the arrays in the text.

The worst thing you can do with this book is try and avoid the code, even if Matlab is new and frustrating. The introductions are rather theoretical (especially for the Junior level undergraduate who is just entering or who hasn't had proofs), but if you work at it the text will make sense.

I give it four stars for the somewhat theoretical introductions, but this was my first real introduction to Matlab and Numerical Methods. I can say after working through the book it prepares you well for future mathematical work and a background in Matlab makes it easy crossover to Maple or pick up c/c++.

It's a very good book, but the code they use is very advanced programming, when the same code to complete the calculations can be written much simpler, and easier to understand.
Overall awesome book for understanding the principles but don't expect to learn matlab from it.

There are just too many typing errors which can be extremely annoying. You try to follow examples and keep getting the wrong answer only to find one of the plus signs is a minus sign and then when you look at the selected answers to see if you are doing it right it might be showing you "the solution for number 4" but you come to realize nope its actually the solution for number 5. It is a terrible textbook in my opinion.

About the Author
Dr. MacKenzie is biometrician for Proteus Wildlife Research Consultants in New Zealand. His main area of expertise is in using occupancy models for monitoring and research. He started working in this area while on a year long stint at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center with Drs William L. Kendall and James D. Nichols during 2000/01. He has acted as a statistical consultant to the Department of Conservation, Ministry of Fisheries and the U.S. Geological Survey. In 2002 Darryl was awarded a prestigious Fast-Start Marsden Grant from the Royal Society of New Zealand for research into optimal study designs for estimating the proportion of area occupied by a target species.

James Nichols received a B.S. in Biology from Wake Forest Univ., M.S. in Wildlife Management from Louisiana State Univ., and Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology from Michigan State Univ. He has spent his entire research career at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Biological Service, and now the U.S. Geological Survey. He is currently a Senior Scientist at Patuxent. His research interests focus on the dynamics and management of animal populations and on methods for estimating population parameters.

Dr Royle is currently a Research Statistician at the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. His research is focused on the application of probability and statistics to ecological problems, especially those related to animal sampling and demographic modeling. Much of his research over the last 10 years has been devoted to the development of methods illustrated in our new book. He has authored or coauthored more than 100 journal articles, and co-authored the books Spatial Capture Recapture, Hierarchical Modeling and Inference in Ecology and Occupancy Estimation and Modeling: Inferring Patterns and Dynamics of Species Occurrence, all published by Academic Press.
