AMEDEO P. GIORGI has been on the faculty of the Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center since 1986. Giorgi founded The Journal of Phenomenological Psychology and was its editor for 25 years.

Only the best

Giorgi's approach is admittedly one of many. However, considering his prolific output over the years and his excellent and rigorous scholarship, I must say that this book represents the very best in the field. In fact, it is no accident that his method (which emerged over the course of a several years from the Duquesne school of phenomenological psychology) has become the standard in psychology and related social/human science disciplines. If you want the very latest and up-to-date version of his work, you would do well to read this book. It took me some time to warm-up to Giorgi's approach as I wanted something that seemed more interpretive and hermeneutic for my dissertation research. Yet, I kept coming back to his approach because it is simply solid and very grounded in the tradition. As I deepened my understanding of Husserl, in particular, I came to truly appreciate the robust nature of Giorgi's work. This is for serious scholar-researchers. I highly recommend it.

Effective

Giorgi presents an easy-to-understand, comprehensive description of his phenomenological approach, which I am using for my Master's level research. As a graduate student, I have read a number of generalized qualitative research books, but none of these outlined a method extensively enough for me to feel comfortable actually doing research. These books (e.g. Creswell's "Five Traditions") sparked my interest in phenomenology as a research design. After deciding on the phenomenological method, I chose this book fairly randomly based on the Amazon.com reviews. I found that "The Descriptive Phenomenological Method in Psychology" was clear, a trait I did not find in articles and websites by other authors describing the phenomenological method. At the end of the book, I feel I have a grasp on what phenomenology is, but more practically, how to logically study phenomena in the field of education.
