Greg Laurie is the pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship (one of America's largest churches) in Riverside, California. Book Ahead of Its Time

I read this book about a decade ago when it first came out. Several months ago, I ran across the book in a box and reread it.

After seeing the apostasy tsunami of the "seeker sensitive" movement since that time, the book struck me as having incredible relevance. The book is all about compromise and how easy it is for Christians to take the path of least resistance. Satan is always trying to derail Christians and over the past decades, pastors have been particularly under attack.

Not preaching truth but making people feel good about themselves is probably the biggest compromise pastors are making today. Pastors such as Rick Warren and Joel Osteen immediately come to mind, although there are countless others. We are loving people right into hell because Christians are afraid of rejection and not being popular with the world. Mother Teresa did the same things in Calcutta: She did many wonderful things caring for physical needs but never encouraged those people to turn from their pagan religions and embrace the truth of Jesus Christ.

Pastor Laurie also takes the "compromise" aspect to our personal lives and how Christians who were once on fire can get off track and cave in to pressures and temptations. Very convicting because even the strongest Christians have their moments. Christians are not perfect, just forgiven.

This book deserves a renewed look because the topic is timeless and a daily challenge for every Christian.

Hits the Nail on the Head

Greg Laurie is a person who delivers the message of the gospel, and the word of God, straight from the Bible. He does it with humor, with compassion, and as a true servant of God, not misrepresenting scripture in any way. I could barely put this great book down, in spite of the fact I found myself convicted up one side and down the other from time to time. But then, as Christians, this is one way we grow. I recommend this book to anyone who has a desire to strengthen their Christian walk, an excellent guide for all of us.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions or at least with thousands of tiny compromises. Not too long ago in a church not too far away from where I live, a pastor was forced to resign and was eventually arrested for embezeling church funds. I know of people who are Christians, but are constantly swearing, getting into trouble, bickering, brawling, etc. How many times do you do something you know is wrong then look back afterwards and wonder, how could I have fallen so low? These are some of the troubling issues that Greg Laurie examines in THE GREAT COMPROMISE.
The thesis is quite simple. People don't fall out of a relationship with God all at once. It happens slowly over time; week by week, day by day, moment by moment. Each day we are faced with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of decisions. In each one of those decisions we can choose to press out the best of that decision and give our utmost for His highest or we can choose less than the best and compromise. Oh, it won't hurt if I travel twenty-five miles over the speed limit, everyone else is going thiry miles over. I really feel terrible today, but I'm going to act like everything is dandy. This one little lie won't hurt, after all I'm not hurting anyone. The scenarios are endless, but the consequences are the same. Slowly but surely we make little compromises that end up leading us to fall away from God. Laurie explores some of those decisions and scenarios and gives Biblically-based advice on what we can do to keep from making the Great Compromise.

Disappointed

I was expecting something different from this book - maybe something more along the Getting Things Done path than what this ended up being. It is definitely a short read - the highlights are outlined in the book description above.

I'd say this is definitely geared more towards management than worker bee's, but there are still a few things anyone can use. Number one being, just say "no" to meetings that don't provide any value. Other than that (which I already try to practice), I just didn't get much out of this book. I'm a little surprised by all of the glowing reviews I read here. Maybe I missed something.

This book turned my head around, not to mention my department

Nine months ago I was hired to help turnaround a once successful business. From day one I realized that this was a company without focus. It's one thing to define a problem, another to find a solution. Haneberg's book was a shot in the arm. Just one concept -- "Stop Multitasking" -- would have been a major breakthrough for my team. And, personally, the idea of doing "One Great Thing" has completely revitalized my approach to a huge job. This book immediately rose to the rank of three or four "must read" titles in my business library. In the couple of months since I first read it (and I've re-read it a couple of times) our department has moved far away from the reactive mode that drove decisions -- we're nailing deadlines, we're closing more sales, we're thinking more strategically across the board. In a business and social environment that throws more at us day-by-day, hour-by-hour, this book is even more important than it would have been just a few years ago. We're all doing more with less -- and this is a book that has helped me see order amid the chaos of conflicting priorities. If it's true, as Woody Allen says, that 98% of success is showing up, then the other 2% is knowing how to keep your eye on the ball once you get there. This is the manual for getting your business -- and your life -- where you want it to be.

Clarity, Vision, Action, and Results

If you want goal-setting glitz and glamour, watch an infomercial. If you want a commonsense management refresher course that reorders your thoughts and shows you a step-by-step path leading to breakthrough successes, read, "Focus Like a Laser Beam."

This is one of those books that sneaks-up on you. You read a section, pause, nod knowingly, and keep reading. Then, throughout the following days and weeks the book's messages keep bubbling to the surface as your context and focus changes.

This book is all about establishing clear visions and focused actions that produce results. Of the book's "10 Ways to Do What Matters Most," my favorite is, "Stop Multitasking, Start Chunking." I always prided myself on my ability to multitask and keep dozens of projects moving at the same time.

After reflecting on this section of the book, I stopped and focused on each project. I realized I had created a great deal of commotion, with very little forward movement.

By carving out "chunks" of time to focus and respond to each project, I immediately experienced a series of small breakthrough accomplishments.

Sure, in hindsight it was commonsense, but without having read "Focus" and learning to dedicate chunks of time to important tasks, I would probably never finished this review.

About the Author
Ian Neath is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 1991. His research currently focuses on seeking evidence for general principles of memory that apply widely over different time scales, different tests, and different hypothetical underlying memory systems. In addition to publishing many articles on memory in peer-reviewed journals, he co-authored the Cengage textbook HUMAN MEMORY: AN INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH, DATA, AND THEORY, 2nd edition; COGLAB on a CD; and COGLAB Reader.

Aimee M. Surprenant is currently an associate professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana. She received her BA in Psychology from New York University in 1988 and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 1992. She received a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health for post-doctoral work at Indiana University in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. Her research has been published in journals such as Perception and Psychophysics, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Memory and Cognition and the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Reads like a stream of consciousness novel

This book covers a great deal of research in memory by condensing each paper into a 1-2 paragraph summary. As a result, the writing is often vague and confusing. Making matters worse, the book seems to be a rough draft published without the benefit of an editor. The sentences are convoluted, terms are poorly defined and used inconsistently, and the material is disorganized. There is no unifying framework for understanding all the research results presented. The lack of organization makes it unsuitable even as a reference.

In short, this book has nothing to recommend it.

Although I am a psych student with a pretty good GPA, I find this book difficult to understand. The difficulty seems to come from the authors' desire to condense as much information as possible in just a few hundred pages. This leads to a cryptic language, where some terms are defined only once and some sentences become a string of such words, a thing which ,personally, frustrated me.

This book is poorly written, and I found some parts to be repetitive. Although I normally do well in my undergraduate psychology classes, I found this book dreadful to read through, as the author doesn't write in a way that would make the concepts easier to understand. It's just not concise as the other psych books I've gone through. A dry read.
