A powerful revelation of Christ at work through the Spirit of God.

I have often pondered the phrase "the seven Spirits of God" found in the Book of Revelation. We don't like to think of the Holy Spirit as more than one spirit. It messes up our understanding of the Trinity! But in this book, John Crowder does an excellent job of explaining just what the seven Spirits of God are and how they relate to other imagery in the Bible, such as the seven lamps of the lampstand in Moses' tabernacle. He also shares how we need to connect with these manifestations of God's Spirit in our day to day lives to fully walk in communion with the Lord and carry His presence with us in a way that makes a difference in the world around us.

I have felt God moving in my life in a powerful way through reading this book. John is often criticized for his "out of the box" approach to ministry, but I have found my relationship with Christ deepened through what he has written. I highly recommend this book.

Seven Spirits Burning by John Crowder - A Book Review

This is the second book I've read by John Crowder. If you read my last review of his book Mystical Union. You know going into this that John and I don't see eye to eye on everything. So I'm proceeding into Seven Spirits Burning maybe even more cautiously than I did with Mystical Union.

I'm pleased to say that the book was much better. John Crowder explores the idea that the "seven spirits", found in the apostle John's vision in the book of Revelation, are the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit is seven-in-one as the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, & Holy Spirit) are three-in-one.

While this is the premis Crowder sets up, it really doesn't get explored in that fashion. He uses the visual example of an almond tree and a menorah to talk about the seven "operations" of the Holy Spirit. These seven "Spirits of God" according to Crowder are found in the book of Isaiah:
1. The Spirit of the Lord
2-3. The Spirit of Wisdom & Understanding
4-5. The Spirit of Counsel & Might
6. The Spirit of Knowledge
7. The Fear of the Lord

The book goes on to talk through each of these 7 "Spirits of God" and how they each manifest themselves in our lives. Crowder brings up a bit of the "believe it and it will be" theology from Mystical Union and briefly speaks on how sanctification is not a process again.

While I'm still not sold on a lot of Crowder's theology I did enjoy this work. He dives deep into scripture and comes up with some excellent thoughts and questions concerning the Holy Spirit and the "Spirits of God".

If you're into pneumatology I'd give it a read, but wouldn't use it as a source for a paper. : )

Such a GREAT read!

Seven Spirits Burning is probably the most unique of John's books (as his others cover much of the same Mystical Christianity related material), but this one is very good. The nature of the book is a study on the Holy Spirit, specifically expounding on the phrase "Seven Spirits Burning" found in Revelation, and the literal and prophetic references to the Holy Spirit throughout the Bible. Personally, I had to enjoy the book slowly, and meditate on each new revelation, before I was comfortable with moving on.

If you haven't read John Crowder before, I would probably recommend that you enjoy his book Mystical Union first. It is definitely an easier read, and is available as an MP3 audio book as well.

John is definitely an eccentric personality, and he focuses on the mystical, experiential aspects of Christianity, but even for people uncomfortable with his out of the box teaching methods, these books will be thoroughly enjoyable. Honestly, I feel his happy antics add to the persona of his writing.

The best Pilates book to date.

Pilates is a method of exercising, shaping and toning the body that's very different from a common workout. Two years ago I started doing Pilates aided by a very good book called The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler. In the first few weeks I had already lost some weight, was noticing the outline of my muscles and had stopped feeling hungry all the time. I have since dropped two dress sizes and I still do the workout daily.
After going through five other books I think that Pilates: Body in Motion is, without a doubt, the best Pilates workout book to date. Why? Well, first, the book is organized in a logical and easy-to-study format that helps to memorize and follow the different levels of the workout program without missing a single step, and allows browsing through them for quick consultations.
Second, it presents the complete sequence for each exercise photographed, and step-by-step instructions for each movement with detailed, but simple, explanations of posture, breathing and motion.
Third, it has complimentary information for each exercise: number of repetitions, warnings and alternatives for people who shouldn't perform particular exercises, modified versions to make sure the program is adaptable to almost anyone, dos and don'ts to insure proper execution, and transitional positions between following exercises to maintain the rhythm of the workout.
Fourth, it includes a thorough explanation of the key principles of the Pilates method, whose application is fundamental to achieve the benefits offered by the workout.
Fifth, it contains preparation exercises for each level (from beginner to advanced) that serve as a sort of test to indicate when to move on to the next level.
I recommend this book to anyone serious about maintaining a healthy, toned, and well-shaped body. I would also recommend buying The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler for additional exercises and The Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford for a natural and effective way to backup your workout on advice on how to eat.

A superlative Pilates manual

There are other good Pilates books out there. Brooke Siler's Pilates Body, in my opinion, raised the bar for all Pilates books- and so far few have come close. Jennifer Kries' Pilates Plus Method is VERY comprehensive and tells you more about muscle relationships and breathing patterns than you thought you needed to know, as well as quite a bit about yoga and dance. However, for the student who wants to learn Pilates (and not yoga or dance), this is the book to use.
Ungaro gives a brief description of the origins of Pilates (and hers is slightly more detailed than some of the other accounts) as well as an introduction to Pilates terminology and principles. READ THESE if you are just starting out. Also, better than other sources I have read, she explains why some movements are considered "Beginner" and some are "Advanced"- good information for anyone who has ever scratched their head when watching a video or following another manual.
Then to the body of the book. She first lays out the Introductory Program, a series of six or seven of the most basic Pilates movements done with modifications. Then the Beginner's Program, which is exactly the Introductory program only with more traditional form. For the Intermediate and Advanced programs, she uses guides which show all of the exercises in order. In addition to being a good quick reference to what sequence to use, it also gives the reader a sense for how each exercise should flow into another.
The exercises themselves are explained with photographs linking breathing to each "mini movement" and just enough text to explain what to do. The photographs in this book- as well as the pages themselves- are perfect. Color photographs in muted tones that make it easy to see what you're supposed to do without being distracting.
Ungaro also includes Circle and Wall exercises. These smaller, shorter routines can be incorporated into your day when you don't have time for a full mat workout, or added on to complement it. One drawback: she does not include the any of the Standing Sculpting Series (used with light weights). If you need a reference for this, see Siler's book. Otherwise, this is the perfect Pilates manual.

How to do Pilates at Home.....

Pick up Pilates:Body in Motion and you know you're actually going to work out with it. The photos are so beautiful and inspirational I found myself lying down immediately to attempt the routine. The introduction is thorough and simple to follow. The author sets the stage for the student to perform each exercise according to the principles she explains in the introduction.
Several added bonuses which I found in this book that were not in any of the other books I looked at. 1) There are breathing instructions on every page for every exercise. 2) Ms. Ungaro is a Physical Therapist and so each exercise comes with a "caution" for certain injuries. I found this very helpful as I have an old knee injury. 3) There is an actual "TRANSITION" for each exercise to help you link one exercise to the next. Although I haven't gotten that far, I imagine that this routine will be very aerobic if you keep moving through the exercises without stopping.
I have been doing the intro section now for just about a week and I think I have the "scoop" concept down pat. I plan to move on to the beginner section next week. I will write another review as my results become apparent.

excellent, no other resource close

I picked up this book from amazon a few months ago (sorry-been lax in reviewing). I'm shocked that no one has submitted 5 star reviews, or any review for that matter, yet, but this book really is top-notch. Yes $35 is a big hit, but, except for Mud to Music, there is no resource remotely like it. It shows very specific instructions and is worth every penny. Highest recommendations. If you haven't ordered Mud to Music yet, do yourself a favor-include with this one on your next order.

One of my all-time favorites. I cry every time I read it.... [The book] is a beautiful script about parenthood, a poignant parable about life and death, a testimony to when the roles of child and parent become blurry. The story reminds you that no matter how grown up you are, you're always someone's child; that no matter how "adult" you are, you're never too old to be loved by your parents. It makes me appreciate even more how my mother still calls me and my brother (despite us being 32- and 22-years-old, respectively) by our childhood nicknames, Pussycat and Tchotchke (Yiddish for "knickknack"). Pigeonholing this as a children's book is like saying "Romeo & Juliet" is merely a cautionary tale about drug abuse. I dare anyone to read this story and not shed at least one tear by the end. A story that transcends generations and inspired an author.

I bought this as a gift for one of my friends because she had never heard of Love You Forever. My mom reading this book to me is one of my fondest childhood memories, even though I only vaguely understood the significance of the story when I was little. I remember the day in elementary school when I half-heartedly picked up that same dog-eared copy to read to my little sister… and broke down in tears as the full scale of the story hit me. It is the very first book to make me cry and did so before any movie or television show could, sealing my love for literature. Now I am a Chicken Soup for the Soul author and read this book to my own children. Love You Forever is the rare story that transcends generations and is the perfect gift for grandparents, parents and children. Highly recommended.

My sons are older & did read many of the Muster Men & Frog & Toad books & a favorite was Harold & the Purple Crayon

Prior to reading about the author & the story behind the book,I had not heard of it. My sons are older & did read many of the Muster Men & Frog & Toad books & a favorite was Harold & the Purple Crayon. As a family growing up. we were all readers & both of my sons were early readers. This particular book made me cry. I am much. much older now but also lost little babies through miscarriages. I had a son who was named David long before he entered this world. This was more than 40 years ago & at that time & in that place, i delivered him much earlier than expected & was alone in my bed when the contractions began & delivered him on my own & he was not born alive. The nurse came in & took him from me but would not let me see his face. It was a different time but i did mourn him. This book absolutely made me cry but i still could relate to the images presented i.e. having my older son take all of the books from the shelf, or tearing photos out of an album or giving Ernie a bath in the toilet which then overflowed when he flushed it.. There is joy & yet such sadness in this book. It kinda broke my heart again & brought my little David back to life. Yet, i do realize that i may not have my older son if David had been born alive.

Excellent Japanese Garden information

As a Volunteer Guide at our Portland Japanese Garden (one of the very best in North America), I've collected a number of Garden books. This book is my favorite. Very beautiful edition of high quality

This book is so beautiful that could be a nice present to anybody.
First impression: cover with a matte finish gives a pleasant feeling and you'll enjoy to keep this book in your hands. The quality of the pictures is excellent. They are bright and with the good contrast.

I like that in addition to the pictures there are a lot of graphical layouts and maps that help to understand the text. You will find description of all the styles of the Japanese gardens, their basic elements and principles. I also liked historical overviews. English is not my native language but the text is clear and easy to read.

As a person who worked in the printing house, I should say that this is a very beautiful and high quality edition that was done carefully and with love.

Outstanding book on Japanese Gardens

I ordered this book somewhat "blind" without having seen it in a bookstore, etc. When it arrived, I must say that I was thrilled with the quality of the text, photos and other illustrations. The book thoroughly covers the basic history, principles and aesthetics of Japanese Gardens. Then it takes an in-depth look at some of the finest gardens of each type found in Japan. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Dr. Manfred Nitsche has more than 40 years’ experience as a chemical engineer. During his career he has designed and built several chemical plants and has been giving engineering training courses for young engineers since 1980. He has written a number of books on piping design, heat exchanger design, heating and cooling systems in plants, column design and waste air cleaning (all in German).

Dr. Nitsche's extensive experience includes designing and building distillation units, tank farms, stirred tank reactor facilities, air purification units and absorption and stripping units for various applications.

Mr. Gbadamosi has over 40 years of experience working in thermal design of heat exchangers. His first industrial experience was as a development engineer researching energy systems at the AEG research laboratories in Hamburg, Germany.
Following this he worked at Claudius Peters AG - a subsidiary of Babcock in the 1970s - designing process systems for the cement industry. Mr. Gbadamosi joined BP Germany in 1975 as a senior process engineer where he was responsible for
designing heat exchangers.

In 1988 he set up the consulting company RAM Systeme PRO SIM Ingenieurbüro GmbH in Hamburg, Germany with a dynamic team of chemical, mechanical engineers and chemists. Since then, he has served the process industries and academic
institutions of Germany and Europe. Some clients include: BASF, BP, Beiersdorf, DEA, DVFG, Infineon (formally Hoechst), Sasol, Shell,TEXACO, Sulzer Chemtech, Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, Helmut Schmidt (German Armed Forces) University, University of Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Fachhochschule Bingen, Fachhochschule Düsseldorf and many others.
